Gerald Eugene Himmelman, 86, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017, in Kentville. Born in Crousetown, he was the son of the late John and Olivia (Wamback) Himmelman. Gerald resided in Crousetown for the first 65 years of his life where he started working in the local mills and industry as a young boy. In the 50s, he sailed the Great Lakes for two seasons, returning home to work his land and woodlands. For many years he worked construction as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator and as someone who knew him well once said, "There wasn't a machine on earth the man couldn't operate." But his first love was as a woodsman and, in his later years in the area, becoming a partner with his son in the operation of a lathe and shingle mill. Over those same years he was a volunteer in many local organizations including the fire department, community hall and community cemetery, served as Elder of St. Andrew's United Church, as a Boy Scout leader, and a member of two fraternal Lodges in the area. Surviving are son Terrance (Gail Schnare), daughter Judith (Robert) Croft, both of Crousetown; brother Lester, granddaughter Julianne Croft (Michael Heim); great-grandchildren Abigayle and Gabe Heim. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother Ernest, sister Dorothy and half-sister Violet. A Graveside Service will be held on June 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the St. Andrew's United Church Cemetery in Crousetown. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr. (902-679-2822).
