Dale Eliot Buckley, age 83, passed away in the Dartmouth General Hospital on April 13, 2020 with his wife Betty and son Balon at his side. Dale was born in Wolfville, residing in Black River and Lumsden in his early years. His education started in a one room country school, advancing to city schools and then to Acadia University where he earned his BSc degree. He went on to study for his MSc degree at the University of Western Ontario where he met his wife Betty, marrying soon after. He proceeded to USC in LA, and then on to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks to continue studies for his PhD. He joined the Canadian Hydrographic Service in 1960, and then the Bedford Institute of Oceanography when it was built in 1962 as part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists and technicians. He became the first Head of the Marine Geology Subdivision when it was formed, as part of the Atlantic Geoscience Centre. He always felt he had the best job in the world and by the end of his 35-year career he had published over 225 scientific papers. He took part in many conferences around the world and participated in information-gathering on board scientific ocean vessels, Canadian and other. In 1982 he was a visiting scientist/lecturer at various cities in China, creating a text book which is still used today. In 1991 he served as a scientific advisor in Jakarta, Indonesia. But his proudest achievement was the creation and sponsorship of the Beluga Award at BIO. This coveted award is presented yearly to a staff member who has contributed to the interdisciplinary cooperation and success of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, be he/she a technician, dockworker, support staff or scientist. Potential recipients are nominated by their fellow workers who must document their worthiness and are voted on by committee. Dale was an avid stamp collector from the time he was a young boy. He was an active Boy Scout achieving many badges via difficult challenges. Sports were always a part of his life, with hockey, handball, curling and golfing being his favourites. Amateur photography was a fun hobby. A showing of his photographs was well received and even resulted in a sale or two! He was mad about Bridge and welcomed an evening’s competition at a moment’s notice. While at Acadia he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force reserve which led to a posting to Canadian Joint Staff Headquarters in London, England. He loved the opportunity that gave him to see a bit more of the world. His interests were varied and he loved nothing more than discussing solutions to world problems over a cup of morning coffee. Dale had a quirky sense of humour and he enjoyed intelligent comedy. Red Skeleton was his favourite comedian. Ever alert to opportunity he again managed to play a successful April Fool joke on his wife this year. He is survived by his wife Betty (Galandzy); sons Balon (Ian Crowe) of Dartmouth NS, and Glen (Elizabeth) of Sackville NB; daughter Keera (Arne) Buchanan of Doha, Qatar; brother Ron (Carol) of Port William NS; as well as many nephews and nieces and their children. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of 3 West and 4 East at the Dartmouth General Hospital for their kindness and compassion in Dale’s final months. At Dale’s request, there will be no service. Memorial donations can be made to Doctors Without Borders, or to a local charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4P 1B9 (902-679-2822).

My Tribute Gift Foundation makes this online charitable giving portal web page MyTributeGift.org (the “Website”) available to you subject to your acceptance of and compliance with these terms of use (the “Terms of Use”). Your donation will be processed through My Tribute Gift Foundation for distribution to your selected charity. Your credit card transaction record will appear as My Tribute Gift Foundation. An official tax receipt for your donation will be issued by My Tribute Gift Foundation. Donations are sent out to charities at the end of each month for all donations received in that previous month. So a donation made on the first day of the month would be sent at the same time as one made on last day. Payments would be sent either by paper check or direct deposit. Please note that the there is 3% + 35¢/transaction fee for credit card processing, My Tribute Gift Foundation collects a 5% administrative fee. These fees help fund the cost of processing all donations, issuing tax receipts, and sending all appropriate information to the selected charity. These fees are assumed by your selected charity, but you will receive a receipt for the full amount of your donation. There are NO additional costs the charity has to endure to participate and accept donations through MyTributeGift.org. According to the American Institute for Philanthropy (charitywatch.org) a charitable organization is considered “Good” if they are spending less than 30% on administration and fundraising costs. My Tribute Gift Foundation helps reduce those administrative costs for charities and allows donors to contribute to lasting memorials for their loved ones.
When donating online, if the donation form has an option to add a tip, there is no convenience fee. The tip is optional and can be adjusted before you submit your donation. The amount of the tip will be displayed to you before you confirm the charge to your payment card. Tips are in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount that goes to the charitable organization. Under IRS and CRA rules, tips are not tax deductible to the donor.
You warrant and represent that all information and materials you provide to My Tribute Gift Foundation, through the Website or otherwise, are accurate and truthful and do not violate third party rights. Indemnity. YOU AGREE TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS THE FOUNDATION PARTIES FROM AND AGAINST ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, DEMANDS, ACTIONS, SUITS AND PROCEEDINGS BROUGHT BY YOU OR ANY THIRD PARTY (COLLECTIVELY "CLAIMS") ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THIS SITE IN BREACH OF THESE TERMS OF USE OR THE INFRINGEMENT BY YOU OF ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS OF ANY PERSON OR ENTITY, INCLUDING ALL LOSSES, LIABILITIES, DAMAGES, COSTS AND EXPENSES (INCLUDING ALL LEGAL FEES) ARISING FROM SUCH CLAIMS.
If in any part of these Terms of Use is held, by a court of competent jurisdiction, to be invalid or unenforceable, such part of these Terms of Use shall be eliminated to the extent permitted in that jurisdiction, for purposes of that jurisdiction, and the remaining Terms of Use shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.
These Terms of Use and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and all federal laws of Canada applicable therein. The courts of the Province of Ontario shall have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising out of these Terms of Use or your use of the Website.
These Terms of Use constitute the entire agreement between you and My Tribute Gift Foundation with respect to the Website, except as we may explicitly agree otherwise in writing.. No delay or failure to exercise any right with respect to these Terms of Use shall be construed as a waiver by My Tribute Gift Foundation.
As a donor, you are responsible for researching the charity, understanding how your money will be used, and understanding the tax implications of your donation. We will email you a receipt, but the deductibility of your donation depends on your individual tax situation. We are not financial, tax, or legal experts. Please do not rely on our information to make decisions about your finances, taxes or legal matters. Consult a qualified professional in your jurisdiction.
Participating organizations have chosen to actively participate in the “Sponsor Program” to be represented in the Sponsor Charity array in an effort to increase their exposure and the opportunity for more memorial donations to be made to their organization. A rate structure is agreed upon and assessed on each donation processed through that program according to each organization’s individual agreement. Giving through that program has helped many organizations realize a drastic and significant increase in net donations.
If a donation form has a line item of Convenience Fee. The Convenience fee is displayed to you prior to approving the charge to your payment card. The convenience fee is in addition to the donation amount, so they do not affect the amount reaching the charitable organization. For example, a $100 donation becomes a $101.50 transaction. The convenience fee is directed immediately to a for-profit service provider. According to IRS and CRA rules the tax deductible receipt will therefore only be issued for the subtotal amount.
My Tribute Gift Foundation seeks to distribute all funds to organizations provided they have maintained active 501c3 certification in the United States or registered charity status in Canada. MTG relies on the beneficiary organizations to maintain and keep up to date contact information on file with the IRS or CRA respectively. This must be done in order for My Tribute Gift Foundation to exercise care and reasonable efforts to distribute payment promptly, without undue cost and burden to the foundation. In the event that a payment has not been deposited 12 months from issuance, the foundation reserves the right to utilize those funds in its mission to the foundation.
My Tribute Gift Foundation reserves the right to modify, change, discontinue and suspend these Terms of Use, the Website, and/or any services offered through the Website, in whole or in part, at any time, without prior notice to you. Your continued access or use of the Website after modifications to these Terms of Use have been posted on the Website shall indicate your acceptance of and agreement to be bound by these Terms of Use as modified. It is your responsibility to review these Terms of Use regularly.
