Obituary of Doris Marion Lockhart

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

With sadness, the family of Doris Marion (Russell) Lockhart, age 97, of Dartmouth, announces her passing on August 5, 2021 in the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Amherst Point, she was the daughter of the late Henry Alexander Russell and Bertha Marjorie (White) Russell of Amherst Point.

Dorrie graduated with honours, in 1941, from St. Charles Commercial School of Amherst and was employed for some years as the BNS manager’s stenographer in Amherst.  She as well worked at Canada Car and the Atlantic Winter Fair.  In 1943 she married Chesley W. Lockhart of Amherst, and they spent many happy years together.

She was predeceased by her husband Ches; daughter Lynn who died in infancy; son Russell Lockhart; sister Frances (Lionel) Funt; brothers Keith Russell and Rev. Stewart (Elisabeth) Russell and Lockhart sisters-in-law Vera (Bob) Benjamin and Ruth (Mac) Rhindress.

She is survived by daughter Linda Vatcher (Bill Anderson); sister-in-law Marina Russell; and nieces, nephews and cousins in Nova Scotia, across Canada and in the US and UK.

Dorrie always had a sparkle in her eye, and time for family.  She achieved “cool aunt” recognition decades ago and never relinquished that status.

Over the last thirty years, Dorrie much enjoyed her volunteer work at Woodlawn United Church in Dartmouth.  She had a wide circle of friends, most of whom she outlived.

A Funeral for Dorrie will take place at Woodlawn United Church on Tuesday, August 31, commencing at 11:00 am. Cremation has taken place, with ashes to be interred at the family plot in Highland View Cemetery in Amherst.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Dorrie’s memory to Woodlawn United Church.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
