Obituary of Mary Jeanne Sproul

Mary Jeanne Sproul, 83, of Litchfield, Annapolis County passed peacefully at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home on Wednesday, August 11, 2022. Loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Mary Madeline (Murphy) Bertrand and CPO Laurent Joseph Lucien Bertrand RCN. Her father, killed in action in 1944 during the loss of HMCS Athabaskan is interred at Plouescat, France. Prior to her marriage she was employed at Maritime Tel + Tel. She moved to Litchfield in 1970 following her marriage and became a member of St. Louis Parish in Annapolis Royal. Here she served as a Sunday school teacher, lay reader, member of the Parish Council and a Charter member of the Catholic Women’s League. Serving her community outside of church, she volunteered with many organizations like Beaver Scouts, 4-H, School Lunch Program, Annapolis Liberal Association, Annapolis Royal School Bands and Parkers Cove Consolidated PTA. She is survived by her sons Paul (Carol) Bertrand of Toronto, David Tillman (Joy) of Litchfield and Colin Elvin (Beverly) of Annapolis Royal. Five grandsons, Carter Sproul, Luke Sproul, Rowan Sproul, Brandon Hudson and Justice Winchester, all of whom she cherished dearly. Sister Bonita (Gerald) Mercer and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Tillman Burton Sproul, sister Kathleen (Garnet) Neves and nephews Dana Hamilton and Steven Mercer.

Funeral service will be held at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Annapolis Royal on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Litchfield-Delap’s Cove Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Jeanne’s memory may be made to the Sisters of Charity-Halifax.
