Obituary of Krystal Joy Peck
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of dear Sister and Aunt, Krystal “Krissy” Joy Peck, 58 of Bear River on March 2, 2025, in the Digby General Hospital. Born on September 25, 1966, at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, NS. Krystal was the daughter of the late Oakley and Carol (Gillie) Peck.
In her early years, Krissy attended a special needs school in Halifax, and then the family moved to Bear River in 1974, where she attended Oakdene School, then ARRA in Annapolis Royal, NS, and later the Community College for the deaf in Amherst, NS, where she received an education in ASL for communicating in sign language. Krissy also lived in Halifax in the mid 80’s for a short time, where she worked for a company doing data entry; this was a big deal for her, as she was starting to branch out in her young adult life of independence. She also took little jobs here and there in the community over the years.
Krissy was a member of the Advent Christian Church and the Nova Scotia – Memories of Days Gone By Facebook page. She enjoyed spending her time on the family's genealogy and sharing the information with the family. She was exceptionally talented in several areas and liked volunteering, teaching sign language to anyone willing to learn. She also loved playing the piano, her favourite pianist was Frank Mills, best known for his "Music Box Dancer", which was blared from her childhood bedroom too many times to count, along with Debbie Boon's “You Light Up My Life”, which she played and sang too that song a million+ times! She also enjoyed ABBA and Michael Jackson. Needless to say, Krissy did have great taste in music artists.
Despite her disabilities, she never let them limit her from taking part in life's small pleasures, such as, learning how to ride a bicycle and mini bike, learning to swim, and eventually learning how to drive a car to owning one, the ultimate goal of freedom and independence was achieved! Krissy was determined to not let what others may have saw as limitations hold her back.
Krissy was extremely family oriented, though her siblings thought she came across as too “bossy” when she reminded them all the time that she was the oldest and knew best. Her memory was impeccable, she remembered everyone’s birthdays, anniversaries, and special family events. Krissy held her many fond memories close to her heart, especially the trips she took with her mother to the city to shop and visit her grandparents (Basil and Erma Gillie), aunts, uncles and cousins there.
In her spare time, Krissy enjoyed crafting and watching the wildlife roam around her home, she especially got a kick out of the racoons and squirrels getting up to no good in the bird feeder. She cherished the company of her cat Gypsy, who was very important part of her life. Krissy loved her family and others around her deeply, she will be missed by all who had the opportunity to be a part of her life.
Krissy is survived by her younger sister, Valerie Rice (Peck); brother Gregory Peck; niece, Erika Rice (Jeff Brown); great nephew, Theoren Brown; aunts; uncles and many cousins. Krissy was predeceased by her parents, Oakley and Carol Peck.
The family of Krissy would like to send a special thank you to the staff if Continuing Care, Digby Clare Home Support Agency, the Palliative Care in Yarmouth Regional, and the Annapolis Community Health Centre, the medical unit at Digby General Hospital, and a very special thank you to her aunt Candi Peck and Rachel Peck for all their help and to her dear friends and care giver's, Vickey Amero and Connie Mass, who were more like sisters to her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 12, 2025 at 1:00pm in the Advent Christian Church with a reception to follow in the Bear River Fire Hall at 2:00pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Conway, NS B0V 1A0 (902-, 245-2444).
