Obituary of Eric Douglas Journeay

Eric Douglas Journeay
January 18, 1943 – April 25, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Eric Douglas Journeay of Aylesford, Nova Scotia, announces his passing on April 25, 2025, in Northwestern Ontario, at the age of 82.

Born in Halifax on January 18, 1943, Eric moved to Weymouth, NS when he was 5 years old and remained there until 1961, when he proudly enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. His 25-year military career included deployments to Germany and Cyprus, as well as moves across the country.

While stationed in Gagetown, NB, Eric met Bernice Richards, the love of his life. They married in 1969 and built a life together spanning provinces and decades. After retiring from the military in 1984, Eric worked at the Drumheller Penitentiary and later as a long-haul truck driver in Alberta.

In 2003, Eric and Bernice returned to Nova Scotia to enjoy retirement. Together, they traveled across Canada and to Europe, creating lasting memories. Eric also remained an active member of the Atlantic Branch of the Black Watch Association, serving as Secretary for many years up until his death. He was also a long-time member of the Kingston Lions Club and served as Back Stage Co-ordinator at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo for many years.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Doug (Rafael) and Julie (Darcy); his cherished dog, Trixie; and many nieces and nephews.

Eric was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Bernice; parents, Richmond and Loretta (Schnare) Journeay; birth mother, Velma (Schnare) Beazley; sister, Marion Faulkner; brothers, Earl Beazley and Arthur Journeay; as well as Bernice’s parents, John and Alice (Tucker) Richards.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the James Bay (Hearst) OPP, the emergency personnel in Hearst, ON, and the kind-hearted individuals who assisted at the scene. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Simple Wishes of the North Funeral Home in Sudbury, ON, for their exceptional care and compassion in looking after Dad. Your kindness and support during this difficult time have been deeply appreciated.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Salvation Army Church in Kentville, NS, and a Family Internment at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Weymouth, NS.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warriors Canada (Donate | Wounded Warriors Canada) in support of the mental health of our Canadian troops, or the Valley Hospice Foundation in Kentville, NS (Donate Now - VALLEY HOSPICE FOUNDATION)

Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
