Obituary of Dorothy Margaret Lockhart

Shannex Orchard Court is sad to announce the passing of long-time resident, Dorothy Margaret Lockhart who passed away May 20,2025. Born on July 7, 1934, She was the daughter of the late, Joe Lockhart & Hattie Morine Lockhart.

“We are guessing she entered the world with that lovely and unforgettable smile of hers.”

Dorothy was born almost completely deaf.  This made life very challenging at times over her 90 years, but she faced all those challenges with… you guessed it, wearing that lovely smile. Dorothy attended “The Women's Institute" where she was taught knitting.  She was a beautiful knitter that never missed a single knit stitch.  She would often knit beautiful items for family members that they were delighted to receive. Dorothy also was employed as a professional housekeeper over here years. This gave Dorothy a sense of accomplishment when life was challenging at times with her hearing.

Dorothy is survived by 10 living nieces and nephews. Some of those living family members are nieces, Margaret, Darrelyn & Janet with the dearest Melody.

She was predeceased by her loving parents and five siblings, brothers, Joe & Harvey Lockhart along with sisters, Ethel Lockhart, Cathline Lockhart Thomas Johnstone & Mary Lockhart Morrisey (Darrell).

Although you should never have a favorite sibling Dorothy loved her brother Joe that died very young in WW2. The loss of this brother was hard for Dorothy. He had a very special place in her heart. Dorothy was the last surviving family member of her immediate family.

Dorothy also had close friends that meant the world to her, Doug & Laura Joyce.  They visited her regularly and were always by her side for special moments and occasions over the years.  Doug & Laura were her rock & support system; she loved them like family. It was so lovely to see.

Dorothy had many things she enjoyed in life.  She was devoted to her Christian Faith, and the Berwick United Church was important to her.  Her faith in God brought her so much comfort. Prayer was truly a solitude for her. Dorothy enjoyed the weekly games of BINGO and was so grateful to Gary Connolly for always making sure she got to her spot and played with her group at the table.  “She couldn't have done it without ya Gary.”  Special thanks to Nann Smith and the Red Hatters for their gatherings over the years at Orchard Court.  Dorothy loved to have fun and you ladies made sure she was always there for those moments. She had so many good times with you ladies.

A heartfelt thanks for to the care & support Dorothy received from Dr. Targett over the years. This didn't go unnoticed and was appreciated by her and her friends.

And last but not least, Shannex Orchard Court.  This is where Dorothy would thank us for all the great years and all we did for her, but instead, we want to thank Dorothy. We feel your loss already.  We look for that smile that is now gone. We look for your hugs or you waving hello to us all as we walk by you. You may not know it, but you had an impact on many of our lives. Those of other residents that became your friends, and the employees. You have touched the hearts of many here.  You showed us that when life is challenging you make the most of it.  You were steadfast & devoted in God, which was nice to see in today’s world.  It was very inspiring. We would all agree that there is an absence and sadness that we will no longer hear your voice.

“Thank you, Dorothy, for being a part of our family here at Orchard Court, you were loved.”

Burial will take place with close friends and her Orchard Court Family by her side at Elm Grove Cemetery. A small memorial will take place for Dorothy at Orchard Court on June 11 at 10:30 with Rev Don from the United Church presiding. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
