Obituary of Wayne Mersey Balcom

It is with great sadness that the family of Wayne Mersey Balcom announces his passing on June 10, 2025, in the Valley Regional Hospital. Born on April 7, 1941, in Port Williams, Wayne was the son of the late Fred and Louise (Sabean) Balcom.

“Beloved Husband, Dad & Bampie”

Wayne lived a life with boundless generosity; he was well known for his kind heart, gentle spirit and a dry sense of humor that he kept until his last days here on earth. Wayne was a shining light for all who had the privilege to meet him, if you ask his daughters, they will tell you that their father was the best dad ever, he was their protector, their hero and their friend.

Wayne married the love of his life, Janet on November 4, 1961, together they created a beautiful life and made countless memories, they would often travel to Florida for the winter and would occasionally sail away on a cruise, Wayne loved to travel. When Wayne was introducing Janet to someone new, he would often refer to her as, “His Bride” – “Wayne was an excellent husband, I got away with a lot” – Janet.

Wayne enjoyed BBQing, spending time at the cottage he built on the lake, and fishing. He felt a calmness when it came to being next to the water and he adored gardening, Janet recalls a time when she brought home a bunch of plants, Wayne looked at her and said “Janet where do you think you’re going to put all these” but Wayne always found a way to ensure his wife’s happiness. Wayne was an animal lover, his family called him a “dog whisperer” he would often look after his daughter, Heather and son-in-law, Grant’s dogs and horses when they were away. Even after his children grew up and had taken on their own lives, Wayne would still do anything he could to help them.

In his younger years, Wayne was employed at Rockwell’s which was the job he enjoyed the most. He also worked at Ralston Purina, Scotia Farm Services. Additionally, Wayne was a sports enthusiast. He was a coach for a Junior League baseball team in Truro, He played baseball, bocce ball, lob ball, hockey and was on the old-timer’s hockey team, Wayne was also a leader at the Truro Cubs. Wayne will be remembered as someone who would do anything for just about anyone. He will be remembered as a kind, affectionate soul who truly made the world a better place, for example through his volunteer work with Helping Hearts, VRH – He was a true gentleman.

Wayne is survived by, his beloved wife, Janet; daughters, Susan Balcom, Heather (Grant) Best and Angela Mason; son, Ian (Nadine) Balcom; sister, Sharon “Peggy” Hovel; grandchildren, as well as several great-grand daughters.

In addition to his parents, Wayne was predeceased by, his brother, Lawrence Balcom; and his grand daughter, Destinée Donavan.
