Barbara Cook

Obituary of Barbara Anne Cook

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Barbara Anne Cook (Barb) on July 9, 2025, at the age of 85.  Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late, Author Smith and Hilda Mackay, growing up in Sambro and Weymouth area.

Barb was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a cherished friend to many.

She was known for her loving, caring, and selfless nature, always radiating an outgoing spirit. Barb was truly the strongest and most caring woman we knew, the unwavering glue that held our family together.

Barb began her working life in the hospitality industry, where she formed lasting friendships while waitressing at the Fundy Restaurant from 1970-1978. It was there she met Margie Cowan (departed), who quickly became like a sister and a dear friend for life. In the early 1980s, her career path led her to the Housekeeping Department of the Digby General Hospital. During this time, she cultivated her lifelong passion for sewing. Barb found immense joy in sewing for others, attracting clients both locally and those who traveled great distances. While her exceptional sewing skills were undeniable, we often wondered if it was truly her needlework or the coffee and laughter shared at her kitchen table that drew people in. As the years passed, Barb deeply cherished these conversations and often spoke of them with great fondness.

Those who knew Barb well understood that she had a life brimming with adventures, she was known to say she could fill a book with her stories. “Mom imparted countless life lessons to her children and possessed a sense of humor like no other. She never missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor, and if there wasn't a partner available, she was famously known to take the broom for a spirited twirl.”

The family is immensely grateful for the exceptional care Barb received at Tideview Terrace. She shared many joyful moments and laughter with the dedicated staff. While Barb loved all her friends at Tideview, she often spoke fondly of staff members Shelly, Lisa, Connie, Kathy, Junior and Anne, and fellow residents including Betty Thomas(departed) and Roberta. While at Tideview, Barb especially treasured visits from her son, Kenny, who visited every day. Part of their daily ritual involved working on jigsaw puzzles. True to Barb's slightly mischievous nature, she would sometimes secretly tuck away a puzzle piece just to watch Kenny search for the missing piece. She would then share her playful mischief with a few friends, finding it utterly hilarious. Rumor has it, Kenny knew about her little game but played along, understanding the pure joy it brought her.

Barb is survived by her loving children: Kenny (Sherry) Handspiker of Digby; Belinda (Paul Jonah) Handspiker of Halifax; Keith Handspiker of Digby and her daughter-in-law, Cindy Handspiker of Winnipeg, widow of her late son Bruce  . She is also survived by her sisters, Velma Franz of New York, Margaret Fraser of Halifax and Dorothy Topple of Halifax. She leaves behind her cherished grandchildren Gavin, Josh, Evan, Dayna, Amber, and Travis, as well as 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Barb was predeceased by her husband's Jackie Handspiker and Darrel Cook, and her sons Bruce Handspiker and James Handspiker. She was also predeceased by her brothers James Smith, Alfred Smith, Allan Smith, and Douglas Smith; her brother-in-law David Handspiker; and her sisters-in-law Vicky Bates, Adelia Smith, and Janet Donavan.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Tideview Terrace and to all her friends who visited while she was a resident.
