Wilma Huva Ohsberg Obituary

Wilma Huva Ohsberg passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025. A beloved and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, her 98 years were the definition of a life well lived. Wilma was born in 1926 in Pyatigorsk, Russia as her family was in the midst of immigrating to Canada. She was a proud Canadian, grateful for what their family had received. The fifth of 11 children in a large and happy family, the Huvas eventually settled in Summerland in Beautiful British Columbia.

The years growing up in the Okanagan Valley left their indelible mark and were a frequent topic of conversation in Wilma’s later years. In 1950 she attended Christian Training School in Edmonton, Alberta where she met the absolute love of her life in the form of her teacher, Oliver Ohsberg; she loved telling that story. Wilma loved Oliver with all her heart and was so proud of him. They married in 1951 and the next most cherished person in her life, Robert, was born in 1952.

Her son Robert (Bob) was 'practically perfect' in her eyes, and she made that plainly known. Her legacy continued to grow with the next generation, and her years as a grandmother brought untold joy and she treasured Karissa, Ian and Victoria. She knit and sewed many offerings for them to show her love. Many happy days were spent all together in PEI in particular.

Wilma loved to be outdoors and was often found poking around in the dirt. Her raspberries were a special treat for the grandkids. Wilma occupied herself in a myriad of ways over the years, but her favorite job was at the ‘Knit and Stitch' in New Minas. It was there she combined her love of sewing, quilting and general crafting with the joy of helping others accomplish their goals. If there was a craft to be done, Wilma was willing to try it. Her quilting skills were amazing, and many happy hours were spent with her New Minas quilting group.

She was an active member of New Minas Baptist Church for over 50 years. Wilma loved Jesus and included him in every aspect of her life, demonstrating it quietly through hospitality in particular. She welcomed many students and friends into her home over the years with warm meals and good conversation. She was always ready to play games, and she was a fierce opponent!

Wilma is survived by her daughter in law Nancy Ohsberg, grandchildren Karissa (Steve) Pilkington, Ian (Katie) Ohsberg, Victoria Ohsberg, great grandchildren Roman, Oliver, Ezra, Harlow and Simon, sisters Alma Lekei, Esther Hogg, Nellie (Larry) Lemke, brother Henry (Sandy) Huva, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Wilma was predeceased by her husband Oliver, son Robert, sister Martha and brothers Reuben, Gary, Fred, Adam and John.

Wilma received excellent, loving care over the last few years as a resident of Ivy Meadows and our family is very grateful for the dedication of the staff.

A private family celebration will occur at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Baptist Ministries or the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 198 Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook, NS (902) 679-2822.
