Obituary of Anna Marie Devenney

Please share a memory of Anna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with love and sadness that we, the daughters of Anna Marie Devenney (Card), announce her passing on Wednesday, October 8th, at Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, NS.

Born in Grand Pré on July 23, 1942, Anna was a member of the Upper Vaughan Baptist Church.

The school Anna attended was next door to her home, which made it easy to get her farm chores done before and after class. Her lifelong friend Maggie was her best friend growing up; although distance eventually came between them, they always stayed in touch and remained very close. Another best friend to Anna was her sister, Iva. Anna and Iva were fortunate to live side by side, creating a well-worn path between their homes and many wonderful memories.

Anna’s daughters share the sentiment that they had a great mom. While they occasionally didn’t make it easy on her, they loved that she loved to laugh and hang out with them and her grandchildren, bringing lots of joy and great memories. She loved cooking, crafting, sewing, and helping with whatever her family needed. She and her husband, Jim, loved their getaways traveling across the Atlantic provinces, with one of their favorite places being White Point Beach Lodge.

Anna, along with her best friend from work, Carolyn, went on many bus trips. Her last trip was to London, England, with her brother David for his daughter Adria’s wedding. She loved gardening—as long as the black flies weren’t out! Every spring she jokingly threatened to sell the house because of those annoying insects. Her retirement was well-earned; she traveled, shopped, baked, and knitted dishcloths and blankets. She had a wonderful group of friends with whom she loved to visit, share cookies, and play cards. Her best buddy was Annie, her cat.

Anna worked as a PCW for 30 years at Dykeland Lodge. From a fellow coworker:

“Girls, your mom was such a nice lady. I loved working with her, and we had some of the best times at work. She was an exceptional PCW, giving the very best care. She had such a big heart for the residents and showed it in all she did. She was not only kind but had a fun side—some of the funniest memories I have, she was in the midst of it all. And then there was her baking. I just made her ginger snap cookies the other day. Many recipes in her handwriting are still in my recipe box.”

Anna is survived by her three daughters: Gail (Ted) Corkum, Jackie (Matt) Doyle, and Tabatha (Dwayne) Wambolt; her step children: Darrrel (Sandy) Devenney, Marion (Arthur) Leightizer and Barb Burns. Her grandchildren: Michael, Sheena, Billy, Shelby, Abigail, Emily, Mitchell, Kayla, and Lucas; and her great-grandchildren: Tianna, Ava, Aliva, Adrian, Bennett, Maverick, Aurora, and Adalynn. She is also survived by her sister Iva Rafuse and brother David Davidson and 15 step-grandchildren, 25 step-great grandchildren and 5 step-great-great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Devenney; brothers Ray, Glenn, Gordon, Ralph, and John; and sister Greta. step daughter Margaret LeBlanc step-son David Devenney

Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook, NS. (902-679-2822)
