Of Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Tuesday April 29, 2008, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1915, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Louisa (Waldorf) Burrows. Gertie and her family came to Halifax in 1917, days after the Halifax Explosion. She married Alex G. Buchanan of Baddeck in 1938. She was predeceased by her husband, an infant son and daughter, and her brother, George L. Burrows. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret L. Best, Morden, Kings Co.; grandchildren, Stephen & Heather; several great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret L. Greenwood, Halifax; nieces, Marie Burrows & Joan Dickey of Dartmouth; nephew, Brian Burrows, Pickering, Ontario. Gertie was the owner of Buchanan Crest Kennels and raised many prize winning German Shorthair Pointers. She was a licensed Guide of Nova Scotia and a member of the Kings County Gun Club. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, was a life member of Laurel Chapter # 67, Berwick, and had been a member of Evangeline Chapter # 15, Kentville and Mayflower Chapter # 2, Aylesford, where she was a Past Matron. Cremation has taken place & there will be no visitation or funeral service by Gertie's request. A private graveside will take place at a later date at the family plot in the Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Annapolis County. Rev. Elizabeth Johnson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Kings Co. S.P.C.A. or to any charity. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the H.C.
