81, Kingston, Kings Co., formerly of Spryfield, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Boston, Mass., he was a son of the late Wofford and Grace (McEwan) Gates.Wally had been a volunteer member of the Spryfield Fire Department for 24 years. He worked at Farmers Dairy in Hammonds Plains for 28 years. Wally was an active hockey player and goalie for both the Spryfield Bombers and the Twin City Dairies. He had been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 152, Spryfield and was present member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 98, Kingston. Surviving are his wife, Nellie R. (Robinson) Gates, Grand View Manor; son, Kevin (Wendy) Gates, Yarmouth; daughter, Florence (Bert) Power, Kingston; granddaughter, Cindy Power; step-grandchildren, Trina & Steven; five step-great-grandchildren; brother, James (Sylvia) Gates, Ottawa, Ont. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Floyd Gates; sister, Betty Ash. There will be no visitation. Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service and Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Saturday February 7, in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). Rev. Dr. Judith Saunders officiating, with a reception to follow. Burial in the Emmanuel Anglican Church Cemetery, Herring Cove Road, Spryfield, at a later date.
