Born Aug. 5, 1921 in Scottâs Bay, Kings Co., he was the only child of Wallace and Dora (Rockwell) Steele. His early school years were spent in Falmouth, Mass. where he spent many happy days on the beaches of Cape Cod. The family returned to NS in 1932 and in the 1940âs he and his father Wallace did carpentry work throughout the Annapolis Valley. In April of 1943 Hubert married Elsie Crocker and they settled in Port Williams where he lived for 69 years. He was an adherent of the Port Williams United Baptist Church. Together Hubert & Elsie founded H. O. Steele Construction Ltd, & became a large employer in the Valley leaving a legacy of fine homes and commercial buildings. After retirement in 1973, they traveled extensively and spent several winters in Florida. He was self-taught, multi-talented and knowledgeable in many areas. He was well known for his passion for fancy cars, big trucks, fast snowmobiles and 4 wheelers. Out in the camps and back roads of Trout Lake hunting and fishing was a favorite past time in years gone by but nothing could match fresh lobster and great friends from "The Bay." He had been known to try his hand at golf, curling, darts and bowling for leisure. He loved to snowplow, cheer for the Montreal Canadians and play crokinole. He was fiercely proud of his family especially his son and daughter who both lived close by. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, & great-grandfather. Hubert was predeceased by his wife Elsie in 2011, and his daughter-in-law Joan Steele in 2012.
