Obituary of Douglas Lamont Saunders

SAUNDERS, Douglas Lamont - 88, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2011, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Charles K. and Bessie O. (Cox) Saunders. Douglas and his father delivered milk throughout the town of Berwick and later took over the family dairy farm from his father and operated it for a number of years. He and his late wife Evelyn had resided on Main Street, Berwick, for all of their married life and had celebrated their 60th. Wedding Anniversary prior to Evelyn?¢s death in March. Douglas had later worked at the Berwick Bakery and at Formex, Kentville. He was a faithful member of the Berwick Baptist Church, where he had been a Sunday school teacher, served as a deacon for many years and he was recently made an honourary deacon. Surviving are his brother, Edmund, Windsor; sisters, Amanda (Paul) Whitman, Berwick; Emily Beaton, Victoria, B.C.; sister-in-law, Marjorie Saunders, Berwick and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn L. (Lawrence) Saunders; brother, Guilford; sisters, Eva Saunders; Margaret Fowke; Cecilia Adamson. Visitation will take place from 7-9 p.m., Monday, in the Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902) 538-9900. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 4, in the Berwick Baptist Church, 265 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. Marilyn Rose officiating, assisted by Rev. Gerald Zinck. Burial in the Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only, donations in his memory may be made to the Berwick Baptist Church, or to any charity.
