NICHOLS, Yvonne Constance - 79, Aylesford East, Kings Co. With deep regret we announce the passing of our loved one, Yvonne, who died at Grand View Manor, Berwick, on Friday, August 5th, 2011. Daughter of the late Stanley and Florence Metie, she was born in Halifax, graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School and in 1953 received her R.N. Diploma from the Halifax Infirmary Hospital. Soon after Yvonne accepted a nursing position at the hospital in Berwick, Nova Scotia, and became night supervisor. Later, she assumed the position of day supervisor and in, 1968, was appointed Director of Nursing of the new Western Kings Memorial ("WKM") Hospital in Berwick, a position Yvonne maintained until her retirement. During her tenure at WKM, she helped organize and facilitate funding for a number of health related programs for the Berwick community. Yvonne was a Board member of the Berwick United Church and was an active and committed member of the Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia. Most importantly, she was a woman who truly loved caring for others. Yvonne was especially fulfilled whenever she assisted in the birth of a baby and shared this wonderful experience with the new mother. She was a compassionate, empathetic and comforting nurse in all situations, especially with those who experienced the anguish of losing a loved one. Without doubt, Yvonne's most profound accomplishment was her ability to be a wonderful sister and a loving friend who always had a way of making the moment brighter, livelier and more memorable. She was predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Florence Metie; her husband, Laird Nichols; her brother, Tony Metie, her young nephew, David Grant. She is survived by sisters, Dorothy Grant (William ), Halifax; Bonnie Montgomery (Andrew) , Kentville, nephews, Andrew Huntley, Halifax; Ian Grant (Karen Prokai) and grandnephews, William and James, Halifax. Visitation will be held at the Berwick United Church, 240 Commercial St., Berwick, on Monday August 8, 2011, at 1p.m. The funeral service will commence 2 p.m. at the same location, Reverend Linda Winton offciating. Burial will follow thereafter at the Aylesford Union Cemetery. Donations may be made to the David Grant Memorial Fund at the IWK Health Centre, Halifax, or to Doctors Without Borders Canada. Yvonne's family wishes to offer their sincerest appreciation to all of the staff and nurses at Grand View Manor in Berwick, particularly those who worked on the Wagner Rainforth unit where Yvonne has comfortably resided for the past two years. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900).
