Obituary of Charles Rupert Mumford

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MUMFORD, Charles Rupert - 89, passed peacefully October 17, 2011 at Hants Community Hospital. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years Norma Margaret (Blois) and his beloved son Glenn. The last member of his immediate family, he was born to Arthur and Janie (Underwood) and predeceased by five brothers Walter, Arthur "Reid", Norman, Gordon, and Harry. He is survived by loving children, Janet (Jon) Curry, Halifax; Ross (Stella), Richibucto N.B.; Anna (Brian) Steadman, Mount Uniacke; Grant, Dartmouth; Wray (Shirley), Rawdon; Dale (Wayne) Davis, Ste.Croix; Dawn, Bedford; Barrie, Mount Uniacke; Vern (Jennifer), Mount Uniacke; daughter-in-law, Susan Collings Mumford, Brooklyn; as well as his special friend Eleanor Scott. A proud family man, Charles adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as his nephews, nieces and cousins. He always looked forward to spending time with his large family and loved welcoming new members. Charles was a true, giving friend to many and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness and generosity. He and Norma shared a love for music. He loved for her to play the organ, and the family treasures the times they sang together. A great storyteller, he was possessed of an incredible memory. Charles loved to take long drives with Norma, family and friends and was very knowledgeable about the people he met and places he travelled. The many years and countless miles he travelled with Gerry Nicoll were an important part of his life. Charles came to Mount Uniacke in 1937 when his parents became caretakers at the Uniacke Estate, developing a lifelong interest in the history and geography of the community. As a provider for his family, Charles was involved in many endeavors but those who knew him well might best remember him leading a team of horses into the woods. A certified timber scaler and independent contractor, forestry was his vocation and he felt closely tied to the land. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 29, at St. Paul's United Church (293 Etter Road, Mount Uniacke ~ Rev. Allison Davis) followed by interment and time of fellowship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Uniacke Union Church Trustee Association (283 Etter Road, Mt. Uniacke, NS B0N 1Z0) or the charity of your choice. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all those who visited, cared, and watched over Charles during his illness. Special thanks to Arlene Bent and Lionel and Bea Hemlow. "Put me in your pocket so I'll be close to you No more will I be lonesome and no more will I be blue And when we have to part dear there'll be no sad adieu For I'll be in your pocket and I'll go along with you"
