Vera Veronica Grantham Steeves, 86 years young, of Halifax, passed at Northwood Center to be with her Lord, while surrounded by family on Monday July 29th. She was born in Halifax NS, the oldest of 10 children, the daughter of the late Roy Herbert and Catherine Mary (Dean) Grantham. She believed her greatest gift and blessing was her family. Her beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren where the joy of her life. She believed learning was a lifelong process. Her early education she received at College Street school. She later finished school through night classes. In her early 70âs she audited university courses through the Halifax library. She was a great cook, an avid reader, loved gardening, and animals. She supported the arts and loved music of all kinds. She was always involved in her community of Beaver Bank, wrote for The Beaver Bank News (Grapevine), volunteered with the Beaver Bank Home and School Association, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts of Canada Her faith was always an important part of her life. In 1964 she became one of the first Sunday School Teachers at St. John Vianney Parish in Lower Sackville, In 1994 she was professed and received into the fraternity of the Queenship of Mary of the Secular Franciscan order of the Roman Catholic Church. She also was a member of the ladies Auxiliary of St Vincentâs Guest House. The last several years she was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and enjoyed the fellowship of the people there. She worked at The Flower Shop on Blowers St, Moirs Chocolates, Cameo Restaurant, Alanâs Hardware and Welchâs Drug Store. Besides raising 5 children, she also volunteered for many organizations including The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Kidney Foundation, CAMR, UNICEF, Hope Cottage, canvased for many political parties, and worked on many elections. She is survived by, Daughters Suzanne Sanford (Dana) Aylesford; Debbie Cormier (Joseph) Lower Sackville; Sons Michael (Monica) Yarmouth; Brian (Pamela Frail) Lakeville; Christopher (Peggy) Halifax. 12 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren. Sister, Madeleine Lexington MA; Sister in-law Carrol Halifax; Brothers Don (Marlene) Upper Sackville; Eddie (Shirley) Calgary; Vernie (Audrey) Bedford; Tommy (Elaine) Timberlea and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by Husband James William Stuart Steeves, who served with the Canadian Merchant Navy & Army; Brothers, Clyde; Harry; Lenny and Garent. Brother in law Don MacLeod; Sister in-law Frances Grantham. Vera was a devoted and much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, god mother, cousin, church member and friend. She was a giving person and always helped others. She touched many people in her lifetime; sheâll always live on in her childrenâs and familiesâ hearts. We would like to extend sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Northwood at the Harbor, especially the Nurses of the Centre 4th and 5th floor, Doctor Meehan and volunteer Susan. Cremation has taken place and Celebration of her Life will be at a later time. Donations can be to the Canadian Cancer Society â The Lodge that gives or the Metro Food Bank Society. Memorial service to be held at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 2096 Windsor Street, Halifax on September 28, 2013 at 2 pm with a reception to follow at the church hall. There will also be a Memorial Mass at Saint Mary's Basilica on September 25, 2013 at 3 pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, Wolfville Chapel (542-4656). She Loved.
