Obituary of Douglas Van Tassel

VanTassel, Douglas Ronald - age 61, of Digby passed away peacefully on November 6, 2013 at Digby General Hospital. Born in Digby he was a son of the late Ronald (Stevie) and Gwendolyn(Shirley) (Baxter) VanTassel. Doug spent all of his life in Digby, close to the ocean. He was a fisherman by trade and in his spare time he enjoyed wood carving and spending time with family and friends. Doug was always making jokes and having his friends laugh all in good fun. He knew many people and will be sadly missed by all that knew him. He was a former member of the Digby Fire Dept. and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #20. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife of 37 years Janet (Handspiker); son, Douglas Ronald (Melyssa) of Petawawa, ON; daughter, Michele (Darryl Jelfs) of Bear River; brothers, Randy (Faye), Digby; Brian (Rose), Falmouth; grandchildren Jesse and Amber Jelfs; Ashley and Ryan VanTassel. He was predeceased by son, Joseph Stephen in 1996. There will be no visitation by family request. In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday November 13 in the Digby Wesleyan Church. Rev. Andrew Maves officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Doug may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
