To Mrs. Hope-Simpson, Ian, Michael, Margie, and Peter whom I never had the privelege to meet; I was saddened to hear of David's passing and just wanted to take a moment to extend to all of you my sincerest sympathy for your loss. It has been almost half a lifetime since I have had any contact with any of you, but as the years have passed, many times I have thought of each of you and wondered what was going on with your lives. David was a remarkable man in so many ways, and I can only scarcely begin to imagine how much he will be missed, not only by you his family, but also by his friends and acquaintances. I wish for all of you the strength to cope with his loss. Respectfully, Shane Whitman

Dear Peggy and family, In late June I spent 2 weeks on a campaign in Port Hope Simpson. Every day, I thought about you and your family. The community is a beautiful town at the mouth of the Alexis River. Artic char and salmon were running! And, not a black fly to be found! My thoughts are with you again. I wish it were under different circumstances. Love to all. XXOO Evelyn

Dear Peggy Was so sorry to read about David's passing. Some of my siblings are here because our older sister Billie has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I recall one of my brothers, Alan, always spoke so highly about David. When I showed him the obituary this afternoon he recounted how knowingly David used to talk about the Gaspereau Valley and the Codroy Valley in NL. Peace, Love and Solidarity Joanne

It is with great sadness that I learned of David_??s passing. I did my undergrad degree in Geology at Saint Mary_??s University while David was teaching there. Although I never actually was in one of his courses, I learned so much from him and always regarded him as one of my mentors. I enjoyed our many conversations on everything from geology to politics and hydroponic gardening (long before it became a common practise!). David_??s boundless enthusiasm, energy and endless supply of anecdotal stories from his own experiences were responsible for turning so many students on to the wonders of geology. He always had time to sit down and help students through their courses. David was certainly the reason why many of those students became successful professionals. One of my favourite memories of him is from the geology fieldschool near Antigonish as he stood in the middle of a very cold stream with a wide smile on his face waiting for the students to recognise the major geological feature he was standing beside. Although he taught that same fieldshool for many years, he was always excited by each students_?? moment of discovery and learning. David will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his family. Sincerely, Kevin Cameron

Our sincere condolences to your family on the passing of David. You would not know us, but we met David many years ago while swimming at the Acadia pool. David was such an inspiration to us with his peaceful positive approach to life. He could do 2 laps to our one in the pool, and then as he sped away on his bike, there was always a cheerful tally ho, have a great day. He was a wonderful person and a blessing to the world. We share in your loss.

Dear Peggy and family, Sincere sympathy on the loss your husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered by many of us as well, but our memories will be of his public life whereas you had the opportunity to share your own lives with him on a daily basis. His love for all life and for peace in the lives of people will remain with us. May your memories of him and your lives with him bring you peace.

To: Peggy Hope-Simpson and family, Dear Friends, I trust you received my card, expressing my deep regrets with David's passing I sent the obituary on to my son Marten, who is a geologist . I wondered if he had known David. You might like to read what he wrote: Yes I did know David, but not well. He led a number of field trips in my undergrad years, and with the Atlantic Geoscience Society annual meetings. He was not a young man, even then, but managed to embarass our youthful athleticism. Of course this mountaineering experience, which I doubt any of his students knew about, probably gave him an edge, and some small secret satisfaction of beating us to the top of an outcrop. I have a few friends on the web who are far enough afield to not have heard of David's passing. I'll forward the link to the obit. Marten I am holding you all in the Light. Love, Corrie

Memories of an inspirational geology teacher. In the late 1950's early 1960's the place to educate future generations of geologists in field work techniques and to experience the wonder of rocks and the secrets they reveal about our past history was Crystal Cliffs, Antigonish. For two weeks students could interact with professors one on one in glorious settings throughout the area. Dr. Hope-Simpson was one of the main organizers of the field school and wrote some of the guide books used. He was exceptionally influential in imparting his enthusiasm

I am greatly saddened to hear of David's death. When I arrived in Nova Scotia way back in 1978, David was instrumental in hiring me as a part-time prof at Saint Mary's even though I had rather little experience as a geology teacher. That I did well as a teacher was largely due to David's confidence in me and his mentorship. He was always available for advice. When I volunteered to lead the spring field school and suggested that we should hold it in California, David was very supporting of what most thought was an outlandish suggestion. And he went along to help. I have many great memories of that class and David. I have some great photos of David on that trip that I'll send along. Sincerely, Steve

Dr. Hope-Simpson was one of the main organizers of the field school and wrote some of the guide books used. He was exceptionally influential in imparting his enthusiasm for geology to all. His quiet, thoughtful explanations coupled with occasional philosophical/religious comments have influenced many students to observe closely and think more expansively. I've met Dr. Hope-Simpson off and on over the years and was always impressed with his intellect and his continuous search for knowledge. He will be missed by everyone his life touched ,no matter how briefly. Lyndon Jensen, New Minas

To you Peggy and all of the family, There is one person in my life who I thank with all my heart. That person is David. In 1966 when I was lacking direction at St. Mary_??s and not enjoying my Engineering, then my Science Physics program, I happened to take Geology. Well, my eyes and soul were opened to the wonders of the planet upon which we live and breathe. It was the only subject in which I read ahead in the text and in which I had developed my own collection. David re-awoke an interest I had when I was 9 years old. He was so blessed with being able to make complex systems seem simple. I realized I could do this and enjoy it. I still enjoy geology to this day. My career has taken me from SMU, to INCO in northern Manitoba, to St. FX for a year of lab instructing, to the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History where I spent 27 magnificent years, to the Johnson GEO CENTRE in St John_??s Newfoundland where I was the founding director, to retirement. I now Chair a Society dedicated to the establishment of an earth science research center in Parrsboro, NS. David gave me the tools to have and enjoy a long career that continues to today. He inspired me to give freely of my acquired knowledge in a non-boastful way. I managed to visit you Peggy and David in Wolfville some 10 years ago. I always wanted to drop in again but my schedule always intruded and I would always plan to visit _??next week._?? It never happened. I have nothing but gratitude, respect, and love for a man who gave so much and didn_??t know he gave such magnificent gifts at all. Perhaps I will get to Ben Nevis and climb it too someday. Thank you David. I treasure your memory. - Bob

I send my deepest condolences to family and friends of Dr. Hope-Simpson. My father, who passed away in 2001 from leukemia worked closely with Dr. Hope-Simpson during his geology degree at SMU in the geology lab. Dr. Hope-Simpson was my father's favorite professor during his time at SMU. Although I did not meet Dr. Hope-Simpson, my family has informed that he was a very ambitious and passionate man who was truly committed to his field of work.

Friends and relatives of David,I first met David teaching students on a Geology Field Class in Antigonish County in 1976 and was immediately impressed by him. He was gracious and courteous to all; students, faculty, and technicians. Over the subsequent years when I met him socially and professionally, my view never waivered. I was envious of his students in that he was one of the best old school professors who were the best teachers not focusing on research but rather getting the message across. After his retirement and I was teaching field school I always remembered that first day and year at Arisaig where I met him even though he had retired many years previous. I knew he was still in the province but no longer at St Marys and now am saddened by his passing but my memories of him remain. My condolences to all he has left behind and long may his memory be with you as well.

Dear Peggy and family, My sincere condolences at this time. I have fond memories of David; in particular, a remarkable camping trip our family made to Bonne Bay NL (~ 1972)when you and your family were vacationing there. I recall one afternoon David, my father and I attempted to walk to the summit of nearby Table Top Mountain - unfortunately, we were stymied by the Newfoundland air force! I remember David's remarkable energy, endurance and enthusiasm. He was always kind, interested and full of remarkable information. I will remember him. Many best wishes to you and your family from the Carver family.

It is sad to know that David's beautiful smile and warm personality are gone, but strong memories remain. Here in Woody Point, Bonne Bay, we pass daily the house David and Peggy lived in for a while, and when we visit Lomond we see it through his eyes, for when he was there in the mid-1930s it was a bustling logging village, of which there is no clearer record than his neatly labelled photos. Though my own geological contacts with David were few and far between, I knew of his reputation as a stimulating and inspiring teacher, especially in the field. His mountaineering travels late in life were an extraordinary example to all who venture into old age.
