Welner, Laurence Roland, 83 of New Ross, Lunenburg County, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2013 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.ÃÂ Born in Rockingham, he was the son of the late Roland and Lucy (Allison) Welner.ÃÂ Laurence began his career with Nova Scotia Power and while working on a crew that brought power to New Ross, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Larder.ÃÂ After retiring from the power company he built a service station in 1959 known as Welner??s Auto Service.ÃÂ He then left the garage to become a teacher at ???Kingstec??.ÃÂ Laurence enjoyed playing horseshoes, crib and was an avid hunter.ÃÂ He was very talented and could repair almost anything.ÃÂ He loved to help people anyway he could and did so by volunteering in many organizations. His passion was the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department, actively serving for 40 years (1958-1998) in various positions including Fire Chief, Deputy Chief and training officer.ÃÂ Laurence loved his family near and far but in particular his grandchildren who will dearly miss him.ÃÂ Surviving are his daughter, Linda (Daryl Reeves) and son, John (Staci Hiltz); grandchildren Erika, Alex and Emma Reeves; Adrian and Kyle Welner; friend, Donna Aalders; sister, Violet Churchill; brothers, Allison (Linda); Rodney (Myrtle) and Winston (Janette). Laurence was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; sisters, Mildred Finck and Betty Welner; brothers, Ross and Carroll. Funeral service and reception will be held at the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department Hall on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 2 pm with viewing at 1 pm prior to the service. Rev. Judy Phillips officiating. Interment at a later date.Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, Coldbrook.
