Field, Derek Richard Alfred. 84 of Cambridge Station, Kings County .The family sadly announces that, after enjoying a long, healthy and interesting life, Derek passed away peacefully, Tuesday March 17, 2009, following a reasonably short, albeit stoic, battle with cancer in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.Born on October 18, 1924, in Southampton, England, the son of the late Hubert and Amy (Stacey) Field, Derek graduated from the University of Southampton, England with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. He held various engineering positions in England and one year in Iran, before emigrating to Canada in 1957. He was employed at Dupont Company of Canada in Kingston, Ontario before accepting the position of Plant Engineer & Technical Superintendent at Huyck Canada (now Weavexx) in Kentville. In 1969 he moved back to Ontario as Project Development Manager for Niagara Wire Weaving in Niagara Falls. From 1972 until his retirement in 1989, he worked for PPG Canada Ltd. as Engineering Manager in their Oshawa plant and Manufacturing Manager in their Hawksbury, Ontario plant. In 2001, Derek and his wife returned to Nova Scotia, where he enjoyed his favorite pastimes of gardening, fishing, playing cards, working on his computer, visiting family and friends and playing chess with his grandson Joel. He is survived by his wife, Noreen (Susie Herget); son, Christopher "CJ" Field, Spryfield; daughter, Susan (Jake Hatfield) Balsor, Viewmount, NS; son Michael, (Janet) Field, Southampton, England; daughter-in-law, Caroline (Mike) Boxall, Devon, England; special niece, Dawn (Paul) Elliott, New Ross, NS; granddaughters, Krystal and Melanie Field, both of Toronto, Ont.; grandson, Jason (Jodi) Balsor, Burlington, NS; grandson Joel (Janice) Balsor, Garland, NS; grandson, Paul Field, Devo,n, England; granddaughters, Donna (Paul) Wolfenden, Philippa "Pip" Field, and Lucy Boxall, all of Devon, England; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother-in-law, John (Mary) Herget, New Ross, NS; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Basil) McDow, New Ross, NS, Irene (Ellis) Spinney, Greenwood, NS, and June (Everett) Arnburg, Kentville, NS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sons ,Richard, David and Andrew (in infancy); brothers, Hubert and Ewart; sister-in-law, Joan Herget and brothers-in-law, Curtis "Buddy" and Perry Herget. Special thanks to Dr. Heather Wellwood, Dr. Julia Merryweather, and the staff of the QE II VG Site and Valley Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday and the memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday all from the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr (Exit 14) Coldbrook..
