Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bowers, Robert Earlen age 97 years. It is with sadness in our hearts we announce the death of our father on October 25, 2015 in the QEII Veterans Wing, Halifax.
Born on June 23, 1917 in Cherry Hill, Lunenburg Co.; he was a son of the late Earlen and Annie (McKenzie) Bowers.
He was a fisherman all his life; at the age of 21 on September 17, 1938 while enroute from Maskells Harbour in the Bras dOr Lakes, Cape Breton, the 40-ton sword fishing vessel, Nelson L passed through the lake, passed Cape Canso and steered southward for home, Cherry Hill in Lunenburg Co. At 8:30pm disaster struck; within 10 minutes the vessel went down. Roberts was one of the 3 survivors. During World War II, Robert was in the Merchant Navy and later became an inshore and offshore fisherman.
He is survived by his sons Robert (Vera) of Bridgewater and Ronald of Digby; granddaughter Andrea of Halifax and grandson Craig (Cooper) and great granddaughter Karsyn, of Vancouver; and ex daughter-in-law Beverly Bowers of Pleasantville.
Predeceased by his wife Marguerite (Joudrey); sisters Doreen and Olga.
In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. The memorial service will be held on November 11, 2014 at 2:30pm from the United Baptist Church in Greenfield, Queens Co. with Rev. Wade Harvey officiating. Burial to follow in the Pine Rest Cemetery, Greenfield, Queens Co.
Family flowers only please. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the V4 Eastwood Wing at the QEII hospital or the NS Alzheimers Association would be greatly appreciated.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nursing staff at the QEII Veterans Halifax (V4 Eastwood Wing) for caring for their father for the last 4 years, especially the last month.
