John was one of the finest human beings I've ever known, deeply appreciative of life, curious and understanding about what it is to be human. Among many images of him three stand out: enjoying a good meal with friends at the dining-room table, and sitting on to talk, laugh, argue, read poetry; sitting alone on a chair outside the old kitchen quietly looking at the vegetable gardens, the fields beyond and the woods from which a deer might venture out; dancing with Jinny, their harmoniously rhythmic style and verve such that one observer at a celebration exclaimed: You're still the best dancers! John, with his love of simplicity, integrity, vitality , was one of the lords of life's dance.

Like other brothers at our fraternity house while at CCNY I had the privilege of spending some time with John. He was the bright, kind of quiet, intellectual guy. John Lee might have passed on, but the impact he had on my life and so many others will live on. To this day, he remains one of the greatest influences in my life. He saw an unknown talent in me and in the four years we spent together as student and teacher, he nurtured and developed that. But his greatest gift to me was simply teaching me how to learn and think on my own. He was the first person to introduce the absurdity of racism and war and forever changed my thought process. Over the years, we corresponded and in 1987, my wife and I visited he and Ginny in Paradise when I was there for a marathon. I still think of Mr. Lee every day and the principles of life (and writing) he taught. I think the true greatness of one's life is how he changed others. John Lee changed me forever and I am eternally grateful.

Dear Ginny and family,
Your father touched me in so many ways throughout his life.
I remember the day I walked into his English class (in the 1960's) and found he was absent...having gone to march with Martin Luther King & supporters in the south.
Each and every class was a memorable experience, as he pushed his students (and me) to explore who we were and who we were becoming through discourse and the written word.
Years later, we became friends in a new way. I met the man who was an inspiring and loving father. The man who led his small family to Paradise and beyond. A beautiful man of insight and love.
I send you all my deepest love today. As you celebrate his life, I know that he is not very far away.
xoxo,
Roger

With deep and profound sadness, did I receive the news today that my lifelong friend, and philosophical mentor, John Lee, has passed away.
While the bedrock of our relationship was created during our years at CCNY, we always stayed connected via phone, emails, and personal visit - even after Jinny and John moved to Nova Scotia.
The intimacy of a reconnection never took more than a millisecond.
When we met in Nova Scotia after 30 years, the conversation re-connected as if we had just had lunch yesterday.
Today, after I received word from Jinny, Beverly and I were in Cleveland sharing Thanksgiving with our daughter and family. Our perceptive son-in-law, sensing my nostalgia and sorrow, invited us to a local Pub, just to talk and share. Here I was able to talk, and be listened to for two hours. Talking about John the person, the friend, and my sorrow at the loss. I know that if John were with us in spirit, he would have smiled, and raised a brew with a cheer!.
I love you John.

To me, it was a powerful, apt coincidence that when Kathy mentioned John's obituary, I was re-reading Walden, the source of the obituary's quote.
John was a quiet, earnest leader, always trying to find ways for people to work together toward bettering their community. I met John as he applied those values as an energetic board member of the Annapolis District Planning Commission and a County Councillor. John understood the imperfect nature of the political structures within which he persevered and by so-doing, he well-represented, the people of his community. John's ideals may not always have won the day, but by them, he made a real difference and will always be well-remembered.

Dear Virginia, John, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Randall,
Naturally, I was shocked and grieved to hear of Johns passing. As I said when you first informed me, I think, given the circumstances, your family decision was the right one. If I were in the same situation, I would probably decide similarly. Certainly I would not want to go on fighting a hopeless battle.
Since our first meeting, John and you all were good friends to me and my aunt Margaret. I would expect that relationship to continue even though John is no longer with us. But even though he is no longer with us, he still is, in a sense. I think those whom we, with our limited vision, call the dead are with us when we call upon them, or that they may be present in a special way even when we dont call upon them.
You see, I think and believe that the universe is so constituted that nothing worthwhile in it is ever completely lost even though it appears to disappear for a time. Beyond the veil we shall meet and greet with great rejoicing those whom we have loved and lost. Until that time I shall remember John as a good friend and look forward to sharing those memories with you all.
Needless to say, please call upon me at 584-3462 if I can help in any way.
Sincerely,
Ben Leonard

John's grammar lessons have served me well, just as he said they would, and he set a wonderful example for me and the many others who went on to teach. I have so many memories of discussions, games, listening to "King Lear" on the record player, and John's efforts to learn French. Mr. Lee encouraged me in my writing when I was in his grade nine English class. That has meant a great deal to me for over 25 years; the lesson I took from that is that one must never fail to appreciate how little it takes to make a lifelong impact on someone. I am certain that he actively chose to be a positive force as often as possible, and that inspires me. I still have the Strunk and White writers' guide he gave me back then as a gift. I am not one to be sentimental and I rarely keep books when I have finished with them, but that one will always be nearby. It has meaning well beyond its pages. Safe journey, Mr. Lee. You have earned it.

He introduced me to Thoreau, encouraged me to read Thurber, and established a fan base among his students for Shakespeare's Lear and Hamlet.
