Macha was a much loved friend and colleague. She never failed to offer warm friendship (she arranged for a surprise party for my 50th birthday) and when my health failed so that I could no longer work full time at Acadia University she convinced colleagues that I should feel welcome at the Counselling Centre to offer academic services to a range of Acadia students on a volunteer basis. As time passed, those services were expanded to a fulfilling part-time position in the Acadia Counselling/Student Resource Centre. She never failed to nurture my confidence as my responsibilities expanded as a colleague.
My experiences with Macha as a friend grew and were typical. Day after day as a devoted mother Macha supported her children and grandchildren. She approached her illness with dignity and honesty. She did not like being sick! We all had wished to have her cheerful good-will for many more years.
Those of us who got to know her well were fortunate; those who knew of her by reputation and stories of her endless well of goodwill were inspired. Remembered always!

Hello Peter and family,
I knew your Mom through her hard work with Voice of Women. She was passionate about the fact that nuclear weapons have no place in our world. She knew that the humanitarian effects of a nuclear weapon incident, whether intentional or accidental are so horrendous, that there is absolutely no response other than prevention.
She was equally passionate about her children and especially her grandchildren.
I knew she thought that creating a safer more peaceful, nuclear weapon free world was essential for all children and grandchildren in the world. She passed on that passion to others in the peace community where she will be very much missed.
My condolences to you.

I met Macha as an eight year old when my sister and she attended Acadia University. I must have registered with her because later she sent me a postcard from where she was travelling and it had a picture of a black bear. Years later, I am a pharmacist in Ottawa and son Peter, our Justice Minister comes into my pharmacy by himself shopping at night. I told him my story. He told me "I think somebody left a big impression on a young boy that day" She really did and I always asked my sister Mary if she has been in touch with Macha. It would have been 57 years but I always remember what a wonderful lady she was.

This is very sad news, indeed. Macha was an absolutely tireless advocate for peace as well as a wonderfully kind, funny and engaging woman. I shall cherish my memories of spending time with her at the 2015 Pugwash Meeting at Speakers' Lodge. She was full of anecdotes and new ideas for pushing forward on nuclear disarmament. My deepest sympathies to her family and friends. She will be sorely missed but abide in our hearts and memories. With much love, Peggy

Very sorry to hear of Macha's passing. She always had a kind smile for me, as a child playing with Peter at their house, and again as someone who needed a counselor at Acadia University. Feeling fortunate to have known her.

She left way too soon! When I saw her last summer she did say she felt she had had a great life and wasn't ready to go but could accept it. She's been a great friend to many over the years.

Dearest Mary, Peter and Andrew:
I read of your beautiful, amazing Mom's passing with a heavy heart, although I knew through Mary that Macha was bravely standing up to cancer. I know from losing my own Mom and Dad that there really aren't words that will ease the emotions you will feel now and always - my only consolation is knowing how blessed we are to have such outstanding, loving, beautiful parents. You are all in my heart and I pray that you will find much strength from being with each other. You and your Mom are in my heart and my prayers. I love you forever.

There will always be a special place in my heart for Macha. During our lives our paths met and many wonderful memories were formed. I'm sure anyone who was fortunate to have met Our Dear Macha feel the same. Let me send condolences with words from the writing of Emily Dickinson:
THIS world is not conclusion;
A sequel stand beyond,
Invisible, as music,
But positive, as sound.
