Dowe, Marjorie Jean (Pierce)
Our mother passed away peacefully in the morning of November 8, 2017 in Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, N.S. Born in Clementsvale, Annapolis County on June 10, 1922, she was the daughter of Ralph and Hazel (née Simpson) Pierce. She was the last of her immediate family.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Dowe of Wolfville, daughters Catherine Dowe, New Minas; Elizabeth (James) Sloan, Aldershot; and Mary-Judith Dowe, Montréal; six devoted grandchildren Tamara (Jon) Cere, Alison (Ted) McCreadie, Emily (Ryan) Morse, Jessica (Adam) Thurlow, Nicholas (Krista) Sloan and Merrick D'Amato; seven wonderful great-grandchildren Ethan, Isaac & Aiden Cere; Harrison & Amelia McCreadie, Madeleine & Caleb Morse and Ezra Thurlow.
She was predeceased by her sister Audrey Gould; 3 brothers Allan, James, and Howard "Bud", as well as a niece, Karen Pierce.
She was a member of Wolfville United Baptist Church for over 60 years, working tirelessly with such groups as the Women's Missionary Society, the Social & Benevolent Society, and the Baby Band as well as serving as a Deacon and other committees. Mum was always active in charitable organizations both in the church and the wider community, raising money for the Red Cross and many other organizations. She was always generous to everyone; if you came to the door in need, you would not be turned away. She was always ready to give you a meal and a bed.
Mum attended school in Clementsvale and Bear River, NS. After leaving school, she taught on a special license before attending Provincial Normal College in Truro. In 1942 she graduated and began a long career as an elementary school teacher. However, in 1944 she took a break from teaching to serve as a private in the Canadian Women's Army Corps as a clerk-typist. Mum attended Acadia University when the war ended and resumed her teaching career. Countless children learned how to read and write from her and she is remembered fondly still. She always loved the little ones; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss her greatly.
Thank you to all the caregivers on the 3 West at Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax. We deeply appreciate the care and compassion shown to our mother and grandmother.
A Service of Remembrance will be held in the Wolfville United Baptist Church on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Family flowers only by request. Donations may be made to the Red Cross Society, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, NS Division or the charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Wolfville Funeral Chapel, 568 Main Street Wolfville (902-542-4656).
