Please share a memory of Sylvia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
FREW, Sylvia Ada Eloise (nee Brushett) - Lantz
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and loyal friend, in her 84th year. Sylvia passed peacefully away at home on 23 April 2018 in the loving presence of her family.
She leaves behind her husband, Allan; children: Sonja, David (Rose), Stephen (Heather), Stephanie Bilodeau (Marc), and Peter (Jackie); 15 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many extended family, and dear friends that she loved like family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eric and Virtue (Power); her brother, Bill; and her daughter, Susan Frew-Craig.
Sylvia grew up in Clarenville and had wonderful memories of her life there – this cultivated her love of Newfoundland. She was a pioneer in telecommunications having been one of the first switchboard operators on the island. She was an avid card player, blueberry picker extraordinaire, and loved to read while sitting outside with a coffee. She got great pleasure pulling the family together for Sunday dinner and homemade bread. She truly enjoyed Christmas Eves – and hanging out with her friends and those of her children. In all of her relationships, Sylvia valued an individual's character above anything else. She was fiercely independent – this was a trait that carried her through tough times and served as an example to those of us closest to her. Yet, of all her characteristics, the one that most set her apart and endeared her to others was her authenticity – she was comfortable in her own skin – and this made it easy and fun to be around her.
We will miss her friendship, selflessness, and strength – she was a true matriarch. Sylvia passed from this world fully knowing how much she was loved and admired by her family and those closest to her – we should all be so lucky.
Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday May 5, 2018 at Calvin Presbyterian Church 3311 Ashburn Ave Halifax. There will also be a celebration held in St. John's Newfoundland at a later date this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local SPCA. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr. (902-679-2822).
Special thanks to Dr. George Burden, the staff from the VON Colchester and Sylvia's other caregivers, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #48 Elmsdale.
