Dear Jim,
We were saddened to learn of the sudden passing of your father from family in Thunder Bay. We had just spoken with him at the end of April.
My long relationship with your father really began with you, when Preston requested me to be the production foreman at Camp 59 so that he would have leave to be with your mom during and following your birth. From that time, during the many years together working at the camp, Preston never ceased to impress me with his harvesting and forestry skills in road location and engineering, and in supervision, time management, budgeting and personnel skills. The supervisory skills that he instilled in me have stood me well all these years.
The cutting areas north of Terrace Bay continually presented challenges in producing wood products for the mill. Those challenges Preston would take in stride, with seemingly laid back manner, to find the best, sometimes only, way to cross a stream or switchback a haul road. Your father would take on projects at home with the same confident I can do that attitude. During the many hours of work and travel, inspired by articles in Harrowsmith and Mother Earth News, we would discuss the next project. The projects were as eclectic as his interests, constructing the Walkers Lake log house, reusing material scrapped when Kimberly-Clark rebuilt the mill, and later, fine woodworking an ash dining table, perfecting beer and wine making or formulating the perfect garden compost just to name a few.
With us working so closely at Camp 59, he became a mentor, an advisor, an advocate, a confidante. He was someone I respected. He was a friend.
Despite working long hours together, we often shared common leisure time, hunting and fishing and of course, the log house project, and many a good time was spent at Pam and Preston’s with their friends and family.
When opportunities presented themselves in Southwestern Ontario we parted ways, but our friendship continued over the years. Although not often enough, our travels to Thunder Bay would always include a visit with Preston and Pam, often a great meal and sometimes an overnight stay. We were always warmly welcomed. The conversations and good spirits would just continue on from the previous visit. The thought of past adventures with your father will always provide me with comfort and a smile.
Even after he moved to Nova Scotia, we would converse on the phone several times a year. Sometimes to thrash around an idea, sometimes to discuss a forestry article he had read. Wiarton Willie’s prognostication on the winter was always a good excuse to call and catch up. Preston sounded like he was settling into the East Coast lifestyle and had found some contentment and challenge in homesteading one more time after your mom had passed away. Lynne and I already miss the phone calls.
We will always remember Preston and feel fortunate to have known him as a friend.
Our sincere condolences, Steve Badger

Hello Jim,
I met your Dad at LU in 1969. Preston was a year ahead of me and while we weren’t close, he stood out as a gentleman even back then, a wonderful example for 200+ other Foresters.
A classmate (Hans Paulsen) and I were planning a moose hunt north of Beardmore in October 1970, but we were short a few essentials. I remember the ease with which your Dad offered us his 16’ aluminum canoe. Though he hardly knew us, he was generous. That gesture helped cement a lifelong friendship between Hans & I, and scored your Dad some roasts and steaks.
I was surprised to learn that Preston lived in Schreiber for many years, just up the road from us here in Dorion. I wish I had known. I was not surprised to learn that he and your Mom built a log home together on Walkers Lake, however. He was a capable individual even back when I knew him.
Those three words: a generous, capable gentleman, sum up my memories of knowing Preston for two years, almost 50 years ago. It’s clear from what I’ve read that he never changed much. I know that you and your family will miss him. I’m sorry for your loss.

Very sorry to hear of Prestons passing. I have many memories of the times we spent at Lakehead. One thing that stands out is that Preston was always willing to help anyone who needed it. I fondly remember his old red and white jeep especially in the winter as it had no heat. We had lots of good times but did lose track of each other over the years. Very sorry for your loss.

Jim and Nicole, Our sincere condolences on Prestons passing. He was a very good friend of mine of sound mind. He helped me with my house project in Rossport a fair bit as I spent 4 seasons rolling logs up and scribing. You also helped me remember we put in our beautiful kitchen window here in Schreiber. Your dad was always a gentleman whom I had always hoped to see again either here or there. We sat together on the big table for a number of good conversation. That black ash table which he made we bought actually when he moved to the east. You would be so welcome to stop by and we could have a toast. We have 3 grandsons and a granddaughter now. Hope to see the 3 of you someday. I miss him too now!

I am sorry to hear of Preston's passing. I first met Preston in the 1980's while working for Kimberly Clark, and worked at Camp 59 during the summer of 1986 as a scaler, where he was the camp foreman. I had many visits to his home on Walker Lake that summer, and stopped by when I was passing through over the years and had nice discussions on various topics with Preston and Pam.
Our condolences to the family

Jim,
I am so very sadden to hear of your fathers passing. Although we had lost touch over the passed few years I have thought of him often and even tried to reconnect with him this past Christmas season. It was not to be.
My best memory with Preston was having him give me a sailing lesson on Walkers Lake after we had been enjoying a few beverages around the fire. It was a nice evening and the wind was just right for a beginner like myself. He was a good instructor and it was so much fun to try a new sport with him.
We also shared a love of gardening and I remember him coming by with a pail of cow manure one day and he told me there weren't many friends that would take his s#*t as happily as I did.
We had a lot of good laughs together and I miss both him and your mom very much. Just so you know, there are tears for his loss but lots of good memories of him in Northern Ontario.
Love and hugs
Alice.
