The Mullen Brothers are known around the world in the Mink community as the Jet Black Mink guys. Many did not know Edsel personally, but he certainly made his mark for that brief period of his life. Much more important though is the legacy and memories he has left for his family and friends. My condolences to all the family.

Being a distant relative (in miles), the times I have shared with "uncle Edsel" have been few but meaningful. As a child I remember "the car" with his namesake, helping work the mink pens (or be in the way), gathering hay in the fields, trying to drive the pick-up truck when I could barely reach the peddles, swimming in the lake, and of course playing cards! Our summer trips to Nova Scotia were always an adventure and part of that was having time with uncle Edsel. I know you are at peace now surrounded by those who have gone before you and I look forward to seeing you again sometime in the future.

My first memory of Edsel is one courtesy of a picture ... he was pulling me around on a toboggan .. I may have been two ... this was in New Tusket ... and I had fallen off and scraped my cheek ... my next memory is of him being there whenever we visited Grandma in New Tusket ... Edsel would never leave that homestead .. and I am sure if he had a choice he probably would have wanted to pass away there, but life's circumstances don't always accommodate your desires and wishes.
I don't know how often I visited New Tusket but I am guessing it was once a year until 1971 or 1972.
I always looked up to Edsel ... he had a great sense of humour ... and like me .. I always thought he was trying to prove himself .. .in his case in the eyes of his older brothers Lelland and Wallace.
I was unbearably shy ... so Edsel always seemed to be there when I needed a self esteem boost ... he taught me how to drive .... he allowed me to work with him shingling the barn ... I followed him on his rounds of feeding grading the mink .. he was the record keeper for breeding and separating the mink ...
I put a lot of pressure on myself to gain his approval but was always making mistakes in my attempt to do this ... punching a hole in the drywall while helping him move a couch; dropping and smashing a bowl in the sink when grandma was making a cake; passing him too close on a skidoo and tearing the seat; running the skidoo through the bottom of a canoe in the barn; and it goes on and on ... but he seemed to take it all in stride.
I was there when the black mink story broke and the world beat a path to New Tusket; I was there when we bought a hospital bed for grandma when she was dying of cancer; I was there when all the cousins came to visit and he took 8 mm film of it all. He came to visit me at University to specifically introduce his new wife; I was there when their dog was killed on the road side and Edsel and I buried her in the pasture.
Edsel, unknowingly to both of us at the time, provided with me a number of life learning experiences and lessons that most people ... growing up ... receive at home. He was like a father to me ... and while we drifted apart after I married and moved to Ontario, he was always on my mind and in my heart.
I know that his lust for life must have have made the last year or two frustrating; but I am pretty sure he passed the same way he lived ... on his terms.
Thank you Edsel ... for all the teachable moments and memories .. I will never forget.

It is sad to lose Uncle Edsel...he is remembered fondly for many reasons. Spending summers in New Tusket from the time I was nine years old brings back many funny memories. He was busy with the mink and was pretty tired so he tried to sleep in many mornings and I and my cousins Michael and Phil would take turns trying to wake him up (per Grammy's orders)! He would grudgingly eat some oatmeal that had been on the back of the stove all morning (that could have been used as wallpaper paste it was so gummy and stiff) and he would say really loud how delicious it was and then make faces behind Gram's back and we would all die laughing at the table.
He let us all feed the mink, help with the haying, go for fish...and made us laugh all the while with his funny ways. At his old camp, we played cards and ran around the lake and enjoyed summers almost with no rules. I have never seen him in a bad mood...
As an adult, I got to see his expertise in cards and listened to many stories that took place with different relatives and there was always that sense of humor that is so reminiscent of N.S. humor.
After I left N.S. he still sent Birthday and Christmas cards...and a quick note to catch me up on the news.
I will miss all of those times...but so grateful he shared all of that fun with me.
