I met Mr. Dowe through his granddaughter and my daughter-in-law, Emily Morse.
He was a gentleman and a scholar and my visits with him were enjoyable to say the least. Our conversations usually centered around people we both knew, but he always inquired about my family and his dry sense of humour made me chuckle.
My condolences to the Dowe family on your loss, but also your good fortune in having this wonderful man in your lives for so long.

We deeply appreciated Russell and Marjorie as friends who welcomed us to the community of Wolfville when we lived there so many years ago as a newly married couple. They were warm and caring people whom we got to know so easily. Russell was a solid and trustworthy person with a dry and subtle sense of humour that drew us in. Marjorie was a kindred spirit and great support for me as we were teachers together in Wolfville Elementary School. We send our heartfelt condolences to Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary-Judith and their families at this time of deep sorrow and grief.

I had this wonderful man as my math teacher at Horton District High School....He was so kind, and such an awesome Math teacher. I always think of how he got through to all his kids...we really understood his way of teaching. He was so compassionate as well. I will always remember how he liked to use the "big" chalk on the board.
He really was an awesome teacher...
Best regards,
Heather

I had the pleasure of working on RW at Grand View Manor when Russell came to stay there. I always enjoyed our talks and he always made me laugh or smile. When I would see him taking his daily walks down the hall I would always tell him to try and not get caught speeding. He always gave me a half grin. One night shift he spoke louder then I have heard him speak when I told him I had a 15 year old son and a 19 year old daughter, he didn’t believe me until I showed him pictures. He always made me laugh and I enjoyed our talks about his teaching. I never had the pleasure of having him as a treacher, but I know If I did he would have made class fun and interesting to learn. I moved to another floor in June but would always tell his daughter Catherine to say hi to him when she would go see him. I did get a chance to see him a few weeks ago and was glad to see him. He will be missed and I will always remember him. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Sincerely,
Sarah Grover

To Russell's family:
I want to express my sincere sorrow to Russell's family. . . children, grandchildren and loved ones.
I have worked with Russell on the staff at HDHS for many years. What stands out to me was his wit and his dry humour. Even more so, perhaps, than that. . . his integrity. Honest to a fault, he often challenged policy decisions with logic and cool headedness, I never saw him upset.
After retirement, a number of us from Horton would travel to Berwick two or three times a year to visit an ailing teacher who was in a nursing home. Those journeys presented us with the opportunity to get to know our co-workers on another level.
Russell was a compassionate and trustworthy individual and teacher. He had a high moral standard which, I believe, he tried his best to live up to.
I offer my prayers and condolences to all the loved ones he left behind.

Sending my condolences to your family at this trying time. Russel and I were first cousins although I have been out of the loop for sometime now. I remember your Dad and Mom bringing you three girls to Parrsboro every summer to visit us...a visit i always looked forward to as you were such happy people. My parents were older when I was born and I had no close siblings. It was nice to think of what it would be like to have a family like you all did. My parents were Hilton and Georgia with my Dad being your Dad's uncle. The last time I saw your dad was at my mom's funeral in 2004. He was such a proud and personable man. I am unable to make it to his funeral tomorrow although I do wish I could. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Maybe someday our paths will meet again.

Dear Catherine, Elizabeth, Mary, Emily and all your dear family,
Please know that you are all being thought of lovingly and with concern for your loss. Russell was such a strong man of character and loved you all so very much. We remember both Marjorie and Russell at Wolfville Baptist Church and truly appreciated their many contributions to our community and especially to our church here in Wolfville - for so many years.
I've had the joy of serving at Kingswood Camp with Marjorie - she in the kitchen and me as camp nurse. I often helped in the kitchen and I will ALWAYS remember her advice to NEVER stand the broom on its' HEAD. Great advice too. I've passed it on to many. We had such fun at camp together and she was such a trooper. Fond memories. Treasured Grandparents you have had and you will have those memories in your hearts forever.
With Love,
Gale And Family (Mark (Garrison), Jill (Mitchell, Angus) and Jake.

So sorry to hear about Russ' passing. As a neighbour over the past 12 years I remember fondly walking up Gaspereau as Russ raked leaves on his front lawn and always had a kind word or a bit of conversation. He was such a devoted husband to Marjory, who we didn't know as well. He was a lovely man, neighbour and we miss his friendly presence.

My sister and I were sharing memories of your parents just last week. Loved having Mr Dowe as my grade six teacher when the Gaspereau School opened in 1965, and then having him accompany us to Horton. He definitely could share a tale in a way one remembered...and learned.
Even more special was the fact that your father never forgot a student, and warmly greeted me whenever we met at any of the many community events he supported.
