Obituary of Carol Marie Henderson

Please share a memory of Carol to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Carol Henderson passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 in Valley Regional Hospital as a result of a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. She was 83. Carol was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Carol Marie Dalrymple, the third of four children, was born on November 27, 1935 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia to the late Laurie and Thelma Dalrymple. Carol grew up in Dartmouth with her sister Betty Feltmate and brothers, Billy Dalrymple (Chrissy) and Wayne Dalrymple (Barb) until she met her lifelong partner Bradley “Denny” Henderson. Carol was an avid dancer and attended weekly socials as a teenager. After Denny learned to dance, they were inseparable and married on June 21, 1956. They resided in Dartmouth while Denny pursued a career in the military and soon after their son Scott was born. Scott was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2017 and passed away shortly thereafter. Cheryl, their first of three daughters, was born in 1958. Kelly came along three years later in 1961, and Lisa was born in 1965.

Carol spent a significant amount of time alone raising her children while Denny traveled with the Canadian Armed Forces. In 1969, Carol and the family moved to Greenwood, Nova Scotia where she continued to raise her family and work at the nearby base Canex. Carol was a great cook and most days there were three home-cooked meals on the table. She loved to bake and share her goods amongst friends and family, even up until this past Christmas. She liked to sew and on the rare occasion that there may have been a mishap she would ensure that the perfect outfit for school or travel was available even if it had to be store-bought. She enjoyed ceramics and made many beautiful pieces over the years. To the very end, Carol knit dishcloths and decorative tea towels, which she shared with family and friends. There are many great memories of summers spent camping with the family. Carol enjoyed several years of friendship and fun with the Red Hatters and was a member of the Kingston United Church Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters Lisa (Wally) Bennett, Halifax; Kelly (Dewayne) Charlton, Aylesford; Cheryl Brown, Wilmot; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Betty Feltmate, Dartmouth; brother Wayne (Barbara) Dalrymple; nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Carol was predeceased by her husband Bradley Henderson, son Scott Henderson, brother William “Billy” Dalrymple and brother-in-law Russell Feltmate.

A special note of thanks to the Palliative Care Team and the many nurses and doctors who cared for her over the years. The staff and residents of Orchard View and Fundy Villa in Berwick provided many comforts which helped Carol enjoy all the benefits of an extended family.

Carol will be sadly missed and will live on in the hearts of all whom she touched. Her vibrant sense of humour was evident right up until the end and will never be forgotten.

Mom, may you continue dancing forever in the arms of the man who you spent the good times and bad for the better part of your life.

There will be no visitation at Carol’s request.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Kingston United Church.  Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 192 Commercial Street, Berwick, NS B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900).
