My memories of Nolas kindness began as a toddler. She and my mother Winona Balser , and her mama Inoboid Worthlake were friends. Nola was innovative; a true believer that Everyone could Learn and succeed when planted in the right soil. Ironically , my late Husband (Gary Sabean) went to introduced me to his Favorite teacher of all time; lol, surprised when Nola embraced me with a hug What a Sweet Moment She truly melded with and adored all generations of people. Her friendly chats at Tim Hortons , Her , Genuine love and Interest of her Creator & his People & her Awesome Track Suits she wore on her daily Walks , should Inspire us all that life can be Celebrated until ones last Breath here on Earth.

Nola was an amazing person and a wonderful friend.
In her professional life she was a caring, devoted teacher and educator. After she retired she was very busy as a community volunteer, working tirelessly, selflessly, in just about every organization that existed at the time. Retirement certainly did not slow her down!
Her mother Ingeborg had been a teacher and from an early age she had wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps and also be a teacher. For most of her fellow Rossway School classmates that was their only education. Fishing for the men and marriage for the women was it. Student Loans did not exist then. The only way she could go to high school in Digby was to find work in town. With her father Avard's help she secured a job as housekeeper for Mayor Denton and his wife.
In this way she had room and board and could get this further education (grades eleven and twelve). After graduation the next obstacle was how to get to Teacher's College, Normal School in Truro. Her aunt Olga Haight (later Crumbaker), an RN, loaned her $500, a small fortune then.
She first taught school in Sandy Cove, then Centreville and Smiths Cove. Finally she ended up as a teacher at Digby High. It was a wonderful and highly successful career. She loved every minute of every day of it.
A few years ago now, she was named Woman of the Year for Digby County. It was announced and entered into the minutes of the provincial legislature and the Admiral Digby Museum held a celebration night to honour her. It was standing room only. There were many words of praise for this remarkable woman.
As a teacher she happily taught the incorrigibles, "the bad boys", who no one else wanted to deal with. They were discarded. Without hope. They are her greatest fans today. She, as always, was firm but fair. She even played baseball with them. They had never known a teacher like this before. An amazing thing happened...they discovered that school could actually be interesting. They all passed grade ten.
After she retired from teaching she was encouraged to apply to for the post of Consultant for the Department of Education. The fact that she wasn't of the correct political stripe was a potential strike against her. Still, she was clearly the best candidate and had anyone else been awarded the position it would have been very hard to justify. She has a BA and two Masters; she had been Supervisor of Guidance, with responsibility for three high schools, and she had been a highly-regarded teacher for many years.
The best person got the job. Her appointment as Consultant for the Department of Education was a particularly exciting time. She travelled all over the province and attended conferences all over the country.
She was instrumental in establishing DALA. She also played a big part in the Hospital and Museum Boards. She was president of the Liberal Party for the S.W. Nova Riding. Liberal MLA Joe Casey wanted her to run after he resigned. With her high profile and reputation, thanks to her long teaching career and volunteering, she very likely would have held the seat for the Liberals. Who knows where that may have led. Even Premier Jeffrey, perhaps?
In the case of the Museum, it was she who finally got it on to a much sounder financial footing. Nola saw to it that it met the criteria necessary to enable it qualify for provincial grants. Many other important changes were brought in during her very productive term as President.
Before her disastrous fall in early 2018 people were always greeting her whether it was in Tim Hortons, Sobeys, Pizza Delight, or out on the street.
Without a doubt it was a life very well spent. There are far too few of us who can truly say, "I lived life to the fullest!"

Sorry to hear of Nola's passing. Remember her well from my school years at DRHS. Enjoyed friendly chats with her at Tim Horton's. She had a unique perspective on living....she called it "the way it was". I really admired her for that!!! She gave a lot to her school and community.
