Obituary of Oakley Garth Peck

Oakley “Oak” Garth Peck, 76, Bear River.  It is with heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Oakley on Thursday, December 19, 2019, in the Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, NS. Born September 25, 1943, at home in Bear River, NS, he was the son of the late Watson and Frances (Parker) Peck.

Oak worked at Phinney’s Music Store, Halifax, Dalhousie University as an Electronic Repairman, and for the Nova Scotia Power Cooperation, Bear River. He was also self-employed and ran his own business, Valley Microwave Electronics.  Oak was a long-time and avid Amateur Radio Operator, holding the call sign of VE1UC.

Music was a big part of Oak’s life. He enjoyed playing hymns on his keyboard and holding fundraising gigs. Oak received great pleasure in taking family and friends flying and enjoyed taking Carol travelling and on many road trips. He was a volunteer for the Bear River Fire Department. Oak had faith in God and admired His hand in nature. His family and extended family were very special to him.

He is survived by his daughters Krystal Peck, Bear River; Valerie Rice, Timberlea; son Gregory Peck, Bear River; granddaughter Erika Rice (Jeff Brown); great-grandson, Theoren Brown, Mount Uniacke; brothers Edgar (Jean), Joshua (Rachel), Lindsey (Gayle) and Brinley (Candi); sisters Joy Shaw (Morley) and Lexie Morgan (Greg); many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Carol (Gillie) Peck of 52 years; brother Rodney; nephews Glendon and Zachary Peck.

A special thank-you to Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton, Digby General Hospital, Valley Regional Hospital, and to Mountain Lea Lodge Nursing Home, Bridgetown, for your compassion and care given to Oak.

A Memorial Service will be held in Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the Advent Christian Church, Bear River, with Reverend Ken Perkins and Reverend Dr. Morley Shaw officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Church Hall. Committal to be at a later date.  Memorial donations, in Oak’s memory, may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Parkinson’s Society, or to a charity of choice.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Digby, B0V 1A0 (902-245-2444).
