Obituary of Ethel May Harvey

Please share a memory of Ethel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ethel May Harvey, 91 of Steam Mill, passed away April 17, 2020 in her home, after a short battle with cancer. Born April 27, 1929, in Mountain Front, she was the daughter of the late William and Frances (Jess) Haggerty.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother and friend.

She worked hard all her life in various jobs, she taught school in a one room school house as a young girl then went on to work as a maid at Palmeter's Motor Inn where she babysat for Kitty Well, Stoney and Lulu Cooper when they were playing at shows in the Valley. Ethel was also a cook in a lumber camp and worked at Hostess Foods both in Centreville and New Minas. She worked in the meat room and as a cashier at several grocery stores in Kentville and New Minas, and later for Dominion Paper Board in Northville. But most of all, she was Mum, not only to her own children but to a lot of the neighborhood children who, to this day, still call her Mum.

She loved to dance and would travel with Country Heat Band to wherever they were playing on a Saturday night. Ethel liked listening to music and spent many Friday nights at Fun Night at the Meadowview Hall listening to local talent and sharing a lot of laughs

She is survived by her children Shirley (Doug) Tracey, Aldershot; Sheldon Harvey, Steam Mill; Norma Webster, New Minas; special nephew Bev (Mary-Anne) Harvey, Centreville; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; sisters Ester (Ralph) Houghton, Centreville; Alice (Myles) Olmstead, Mountain Front; brother Clifford Haggerty, Alberta; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and many extended family and friends.

Besides her parents, Ethel was predeceased by her husband Clyde Harvey in 2008; son-in-law Edward Webster; one great-granddaughter Rita Harvey; brothers Earl, Rae, Bud, Bronson and Lloyd; sister Winnie.

There will be no visitation or service by request. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to charity of one’s choice.   Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4P 1B9 (902-679-2822).
