I just recently heard of the passing of my fellow Horton math colleague from just down the hall in Lower Eaton.
I learned a lot from him in my early days. Plus I always could count on his students knowing grade 9 math, and especially factoring. The last time I saw him was about 20 years ago, while we were both getting water just outside Truro. We only talked maybe five minutes, but it seemed like we were just on a break between classes at Horton, as he made me laugh as usual.
So sorry for your loss. I hope his many memories help you during this challenging time.

Anna and family it is with a heavy heart that I send my condolences for your loss. My first recollection of Virgil (+/- 64 years ago) was when you Anna, were teaching in Lower Avonport and I was in grade 2. Virgil I believe was going to Acadia and you were living in half of the school with outside toilet facilities and a wood stove. You both were very kind to me. On reaching Horton District High School there was Virgil teaching Grade 7 Science. It was an enjoyable year and some of his methods I carried on throughout my teaching career. He was to become a colleague where we taught together until retirement. Virgil was always kind, helpful and interested in his students. Thinking back on those early years it was a joy to have him as a colleague with his keen wit and humor. One of the best. Brainard

To the family of the late Virgil Dearman,
I was a student of Horton District High School and Mr. Dearman taught me math. He was a wonderful and patient teacher, and I would never have gotten through math (algebra) that year if he hadn't offered to spend extra time with me over the noon hour. When I finally "got it", he was so happy for me.
RIP, Mr. Dearman. You were truly one of the best teachers.

Good memories are the light in the dark. I remember Virgil before I started teaching at Horton DHS. I was an usher at the Acadia Theatre and Virgil would come in just after the lights had gone, stand at the back wall waiting for his eyes to adjust before me informing him that I could help him find a seat. This happened on several occasions, so I gradually got to know him a bit. But it was when I joined the staff at HDHS that I became friends with Virgil. That was in 1965.
Virgil was soft spoken, loved a good joke and a good laugh. He was considered a good and patient Math teacher. Virgil was also a member of the Cadet Corps formed by Connie MacNeil in the late sixties and early seventies. I was a member of that Corps along with a couple of others. Virgil was Quarter Master and handed out the uniforms to the cadets. . . a considerable task to keep organized.
I knew Virgil's passion for hockey as a Maple Leafs fan and as a supporter of the Acadia Axemen. Apparently, he hardly missed a game at the University Rink..
I could go on about other memories, but suffice to say. . . I will miss him. He was a good man.
My sincere sympathies go out to Anna and all the members of the Virgil's family. Rest in peace, Virgil.3NrdF

This man was one heck of a teacher. If you wanted to learn he was prepared to go the extra mile to make sure you did learn. If it hadn't been for Mr. Dearman, I'd still be sitting in Grade IX trying to understand math. The old HDHS had 3 remarkable math teachers, John Horton, Virgil Dearman and Mabel Gaul. Mr. Dearman spent many a night on the phone with me trying to help me understand my homework. The next morning he'd always check my homework, never say a word, just smile and carried on back to his desk. My sincerest condolences to his family.
