To My Dearest Nanny
True to form, my fondest memories of Nanny are all intertwined with food.
One of my earliest memories is snacking on raisins from a quarter cup measure while rocking on her kitchen chair.
I remember her hands, ladling corn chowder into the bowls, then crumbling saltines on top.
I remember my skepticism and fear of eating creamed peas on toast, but I still crave it to this day when I need some comfort.
I always use Nanny’s recipe for the dumplings she steamed with sweet pickled pork and sauerkraut. I think this is my very favourite meal, and the one I would choose to be served if I were on death row!
I looked forward to the tins of molasses cookies or jammy thumbprints when I would come for a visit.
And I absolutely loved feeding all those leftover scraps of food to the gulls off the flat rock by her driveway.
But, really! It isn’t all about food!
I remember her love.
She showed it in how she ran after our car when we left her house, rapping her long, manicured nails on my window.
She proved it by waiting for us to get off the school bus, as Bitsy ran down the hill to greet us.
She demonstrated it by abandoning her running Ford Fiesta, door ajar, sprinting to give me a hug on a trip home from Toronto with my friends.
And Nanny knew stuff too.
She pickled the best beets, shucked scallops, filleted and smoked mackerel and baked amazing bread. Sorry, guess it’s back to food again!
She really knew how to kick up her heels and have a good time.
She knew how to laugh and identify a handsome man.
She knew what it was like to live her life for the ones that she loved.
And she really knew how to be a great Nanny!
I love you dearly, Nanoo, and I will keep you in my heart, thoughts and recipe book forever!

We are so sorry for your loss. Shirley was a wonderful roommate for Mom (Hilda). They got along so well and were very compatible. Mom will really miss her. Also thanks for your kindness towards Mom, you always had kind words for her and we greatly appreciated that.
With great sadness.
