Obituary of Jan Peter Speelman

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jan Peter Speelman of Aylesford, who went to be with his Lord, on Saturday, November 28, 2020.

Although we are saddened by the hole his absence leaves in our family, we take comfort in the knowledge that he is now in the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Born in Pernis (Rotterdam), the Netherlands, on July 17, 1932, Jan grew up amid WWII with his parents and two brothers, before immigrating to Canada in 1948. After arriving in the Annapolis Valley, he worked for several local farmers, quickly became involved with the local Dutch community, and met a pretty Dutch girl named Reinoutje, who quickly became the love of his life.

Jan was a great storyteller and was always happy to tell of his many experiences, whether it be farming, hunting, life in the Netherlands, his family, or his faith in Jesus Christ. He will be remembered as being loving, kind-hearted, full of fun, and a devoted ambassador of Christ. Throughout a life in agriculture, Jan was involved in many types of farming including dairy, pigs, cash crops, and beef. He also spent four decades as a livestock dealer with dealings extending to Ontario and beyond. Jan was a respected deacon at the Aylesford Baptist Church, serving as the chairman of that board for the last 20 years. He also loved to sing, and performed with the Annapolis Valley Men's Choir, bringing gospel music to many churches, nursing homes, and other venues around the Valley.

Most of all, Jan loved his family, he leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Reinie; their five children Joanne, Rose (Bill) Horsnell, Renee (Bernard) Gerrits, Jan, and John; his brother Hans (Atie); 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jan and Jaapje Speelman and brother Jack.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 5th, 2020 at 2:00 pm in the Aylesford Baptist Church (Limited Seating Available). Family flowers only. Memorial donations in Jan’s memory may be made to the Aylesford Baptist Church.
