Obituary of George Arthur Holt

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

The family of George Arthur Holt are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Monday, February 15, 2021, while in the Queens Manor Nursing Home. George was the son of the late Arthur Burgess Holt and Lois May (Sturk) Holt. He was born in Canning, NS on June 13, 1930.

George attended Canning school and later went to Agricultural College in Truro.  He grew up on a dairy and orchard farm and took over the family farm when his father passed away. George sold the farm in the early 1970s and then went to work for M.W. Graves in Hillaton.

George took courses and became a stationary engineer. The plant changed hands several times, but George stayed there until he retired at the age of 66. He married Eileen Blenus in 1961. They were happily married for nearly 50 years until she passed away in 2011. George and Eileen loved spending time with their friends. Over the years, they hosted numerous card parties, and they visited family and friends whenever time allowed. George loved to go for a drive on the weekend, often dropping in on a friend along the way, and was also a loyal Mason for many decades. George loved music and, after he retired, he frequented local jams on a regular basis, to soak up the tunes.

He is survived by his sons Paul (Claire), Bridgewater; Arthur, California; daughter Mary, Bridgewater; four grandchildren Olivia and Marilyn Zimmerman, Rachel and Michaela Holt; and one great-grandchild, Oliver Mason. George also appreciated the close relationship he shared with his daughter’s close friends, Melissa Sawh and Michelle Tupper.

In addition to his parents, and his wife, George was predeceased by his sister Edna (Graham) Sanford.

A Service for George will take place on June 3, 2023, at 2:00 pm, in the Serenity Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow in the Canard Burial Grounds. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army and/or your local fire department. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
