Obituary of James Henry Wies

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James “Jim” Henry Wies of Windsor passed away peacefully on June 11, 2021, at the age of 82, in his home in Garland’s Crossing (Windsor) in the presence of his family. Jim was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario, on August 9, 1938 to the late Henry and Theresa (Bako) Wies, and raised in nearby Courtland, where the family settled after immigrating from Hungary.

Following service as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Jim led an adventurous career as an entrepreneur and businessman that took him across North America, including Ontario, Alberta, California, Florida and Nova Scotia, where he has lived for 48 years. When Jim was in Ontario, he met his first wife, Gladys, with whom he had two sons and remained close friends.

Jim had many passions throughout his life, but more important to Jim than any was his family. Whether it was camping, a backyard project, a BBQ, or a road trip across the country, he always did it for, and with, his family and made the most out of every occasion. In recent years, he enjoyed life as a patron of the great wineries of the Annapolis Valley and he was no stranger to a good Caesar on a hot summer day.

Throughout the years, he was a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather and husband. Jim married the love of his life, Lucianne Wies (Massey), on October 17, 1992, in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia.

Jim’s wisdom, knowledge and love was plentiful. He was the pillar, rock and anchor of his family.  His presence will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife Luci of 29 years, Jim leaves behind his two sons, Mark (Suzanne) Wies of Fredericton, NB; Chris Wies of Halifax; stepsons, Richard (Galina) Leighton, children Liam and Owen; and Ryan (Jaxqueline) Leighton, children Sara, Riley, Dillon and Parker; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher, Matthew, Justin and Michael; two great-grandchildren, Layla Wies-Stuart and Ryleigh Wies, and his precious dog, Katy.

Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sister Mary Borovich and brother John Wies.

A special thank you to all of Jim’s neighbours and friends in The Crossing for their friendship and support over the last 10 years and to all the nurses and staff of the Hants Community Hospital and the VON nurses for providing such wonderful and compassionate care.

In keeping with Jim’s wishes, there will be no formal service or visitation. Instead, a Celebration of Life shall follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
