Mama Jacob's,
This is the little French boy who lived across the street in Island view heights. Today, November 11th, 2024 while watching remembrance day ceremony, I do not know why, but all I could think about was Mama, Papa, the two oldest boys, the girls, my best childhood friend Lisa. I will never forget my buddy Lisa and myself who played for hours every day, rain, sunshine. I remember my Dutch family will so much happiness and how they were so good to my Mum and myself.
I remember going to the Jacob's house before Halloween one year, and the older girls were painting there faxes to go out while Lisa and myself had paper costumes and plastic masks with cut out eyes, those were so hot and you were a ball of sweat.
When Papa got his job in Berwick and my mum told me the Jacob's were moving, I was so devastated, I thought I was loosing my second family who I loved so very much, I was so sad especially loosing my best friend and sandbox buddy Lisa, who I would have walked in a fire for.
But that was not the end, Mama and Papa for many a Summer would pick me up either at the ferry in Digby or train station, I spent what seemed many Summers with the Jacob's and that was the best season of the year. I loved Mama and Papa so much, they both were salt of the earth, Mama was the best, her smile would light up the room, Papa was quite, but don't let that fool you, when Papa spoke we all quit any shenanigans. Mornings were special at the house, porridge, powdered milk. Then came chores for all. In the summer my job was to feed the chickens, dogs ( Bruno, Mikka) nibbles the sheep tied up in the tall grass. The horse got water, and Papa brought home what seemed to be endless bags of scraps of bread for the animals. Endless days of walking in hot summer days or bicycle rides what seemed so far away to a young kid, but probably not. It was usually Anna or Lisa and myself, when in Saint John I remember Anna had asthma really bad, and that I think was another reason for the move decision.
Bailing hay, collecting eggs, pretending to drive the horse drawn cart, I have so many wonderful memories. In the short time it takes to live a lifetime there are moments, people who make a difference, Mama was that kinda person, as Papa was also. Even when I stopped going to the farm, those days have lived with me. Mama, Papa came to Saint John when I graduated high school, in 2001 I married the love of my life, she is a good woman, salt of the earth who reminded me and I felt the same pure goodness as I felt with my Mama Jacob's. I sent an invitation to Papa and Mama for my wedding, I wasn't sure they would be able to come. The ceremony started and I saw Papa and Mama standing in the pew. I immediately got a lump in my throat, the church was quite, I looked at both of them with joy, called out to both of them calling Mama and Papa, I think they were kinda shocked when as a 33 year old man saying that during my wedding. Mama said, you remember, I said how could I not.
So I am not sure why this day of all days my Dutch family memories are there, but when I mentioned it to my wife she brought her phone over to show me this. I said yes this is my Mama Jacob's, my eyes welled up, but all good memories. And if I remember well Mama is in the kingdom of heaven keeping her John in line all while watching her heart and souls left on this earth. Mama is in paradise with all her departed loved ones and our lord Jesus Christ. And when it is my time, and I have been judged, and let through St. Peter's gate Mama and Papa will be there to also welcome me.
You will never die Mama in my heart, thank you for everything you did, when I know you did it because it was just the person you are, and same for Papa both are and we're the rarest loving people with the biggest hearts.
Daryl

Sorry to learn of Marias death. Sincere condolences to John and all the family. You will miss her so much. Maria was a generous woman who believed in getting involved and working to make the world better. She’d frequently arrive with garden produce to share. I always appreciated her ability to give her honest opinion and speak her mind. She and John were great friends to John McNeil and continued to visit him. May she rest in peace and may all who loved her be comforted.
