Obituary of Eleanor Marguerite Mason

Please share a memory of Eleanor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Eleanor Marguerite Mason, nee Lockhart, aged 94, died peacefully on Sunday, August 14, 2022 in the St Vincent's Nursing Home in Halifax. Eleanor was the daughter of the late Charles Stanley and Mable Lavinia Lockhart of Kentville.

Eleanor grew up on the Kentville Experimental Farm where her father was the General Manager. After high school, Eleanor attended Normal College in Truro, training to be a Home Economics Teacher. After successfully completing her courses, Eleanor worked for a year as a Circuit Home Economics Teacher in the Margaree area of Cape Breton, teaching in six different schools. After traveling to England to meet Bernard Mason, her pen pal of eight years, she came home engaged to be married. Bernard immigrated to Canada the following year. They were married and raised their family in Kentville. Eleanor continued to work as a Substitute Home Economics Teacher while raising her children and doing volunteer work through her church. Eleanor was active in Guiding for many years, as Girl Guide Captain and Brown Owl, as well as a provincial trainer, helping others develop their skills.

A generous and welcoming Eleanor and Bernard hosted several Rotary exchange students over the years and “unofficially adopted” numerous international students from Acadia University, many of whom Eleanor maintained contact with for years. When her children were grown, Eleanor focused her homemaking skills on welcoming tourists to the bed and breakfast they opened after Bernard retired.

Eleanor eagerly participated in volunteer church groups, helping with many events each year, as well as singing in her church choir.  Wanting to keep busy in later years, Eleanor knitted over 200 hats and scarves which she then gave away to people she felt could use a little more warmth in their lives.

Eleanor is survived by her children, David Mason (Sharon Rose) and Daphne (Michael) Trenaman; her grandchildren, Christopher Trenaman (Shanna Feener), Jason Trenaman, Thomas Mason-Rose, Severn Mason-Rose; and great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Samuel Trenaman.

Eleanor was predeceased by her loving husband, Bernard Mason, brother, Marshall “Budd” Lockhart; sisters, Kathleen “Kaye” Slipp and Brittie “Bee” Denney.

A Memorial Service will be held on August 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the Wolfville Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
