Helen Margaret Chapman (Allen) – Dartmouth, NS

It is with enormous sadness that the family of Helen Chapman (Allen), age 86, announce the sudden and unexpected loss of our mother at the Dartmouth General Hospital on the 25th October 2022.

Helen was born on 14 January 1936 to Adelbert Allen and Thelma Allen (Davis) in Bayside NB.

As a young girl growing up on the family farm in New Brunswick, Helen was a hard-working farm hand, capable of working the horses and tending to the many chores.  She enjoyed recounting many wonderful stories of her farm life in Westmorland County, a time that contributed to her great strength and character.

Helen went to school at the Port Elgin Regional Memorial High School and graduated in 1952.

During this time, she met the love of her life, Leyland Chapman from Bayfield NB.  From the early days of their courtship, they were never far from each other and eventually married in 1955.

After graduation, Helen went on to Secretarial school where she excelled in the skills as an organizer and administrator graduating in 1954.

Helen made her first big step out on her own when she moved away from home to start her first job at Eaton’s in Moncton.

Helen primarily stayed home to raise her three children as the family moved to various locations, starting in Moncton, then to Dartmouth, NS, Montreal, QC, and Mississauga, ON. Helen and Ley moved back to Dartmouth, NS after the children left home, and spent their retirement years there, actively engaged in the community.

Helen was most proud of her family, taking immense joy in having family gatherings.  As the family grew and the next generations emerged, the greater the joy for Helen.  She loved to make bread and prepare wonderful meals to keep the clan happy and fed.  Helen was the dependable anchor upon which the whole family could always rely as the hostess for special events.  A source of love, guidance, and wisdom for all the generations, she was a good listener, and a provider of laughs and great humour.

She took special pleasure in socializing with her many friends, was a member of Stairs Memorial United Church community, and enjoyed the close companionship of the members of her Craft Group of women.

Helen is predeceased by her loving husband Ley and her sister Marcia Saunders, and survived by her sister Evelyn Smith, her children Linda Chapman (Dave), Jeffrey Chapman (Mary Ellen), Allen Chapman (Donna), her grandchildren (Krista, Andrew, Kyle, Leah, Emma, Alexander), her many great grandchildren, and her beloved cat Gus.

Service to be held at Stairs Memorial United Church on Wednesday, 2 Nov 2022, at 2 PM.  Online condolences by visiting: www.serenityhrm.ca
