Obituary of Barbara Jean Peters

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Barbara Jean “Dolly” Peters (Gidney), age 89 of Gullivers Cove, on Thursday, April 13, 2023 in Tideview Terrace with family by her side. Born in Centerville on August 6, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth E. Gidney & Marjorie Nesbitt (Hersey).

Dolly left school at an early age and worked at Hedley House in Smiths Cove as a housekeeper. Later she moved in with Vivian & Nelson Raymond, in Gullivers Cove, to help with their growing family. This is where she met and first scolded her husband for not taking off his shoes and making a mess of the clean kitchen floor.

Dolly had many interests such as bowling, playing cards, and enjoyed the yearly Senior Games held locally in and around Digby.  She was very competitive and didn't like to lose. She was a fabulous cook and was extremely proud of her skills in the kitchen, as well as being known for her delicious pies and amazing seafood chowder.

“We will miss all the wonderful meals at our Mother’s table.”

Dolly is survived by her children, Judy (Gary) Carty, Gullivers Cove; Barry (Susan Feader) Peters, Bridgewater; Evelyn (Mike) Cochran, Lisbon, Ohio; Jean (Sean) Brown, Digby; grandchildren, Lisa (Peter) Burnie, Shelley (Jason) Farstad, Brandon (Valerie) Carty, Andrew Peters, Stephanie (Tim) Myers, Makayla Cochran, Brendan Brown, Corey Brown; great-grandchildren, Justin Carty, Breagh Carty, Jarred Lowe, Faith Peters, Aiden Myers, Peyton Myers, Renley Wise; great great-grandchildren, Scottie Hobson, Cohen Carty, Theo Lowe; as well as several nieces and nephews whom were very special to her.

In addition to her parents, Dolly was predeceased by her husband, Harvey W. Peters; sisters, Frances MacDonald, Marie Lightfoot, Muriel Thompson; brothers, Kenneth Gidney and Harold (Ba) Thompson.

A very special thank you to the caring staff at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, and Tideview Terrace, Digby; their patience and kindness were greatly appreciated.  Also special thanks to Brittney King for always keeping Mom’s hair looking at its best and nails always painted.

A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at 2:00 pm in the Digby County Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Rossway Baptist Church (902-250-2289). Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Digby, NS B0V 1A0 (902-245-2444).
