Downey, Douglas Martin

March 1, 1930 - June 3, 2023

In Doug's words:

“Alas, the report of my demise has NOT been greatly exaggerated and I indeed did bite the dust on June 3, 2023. Born at 70 Cornwallis Street, Halifax, NS, on St David's Day 1930 to the greatest of Irish-Newfie parents, Hugh, and Violet (Aylward) Downey. I spend the hungry thirties on Cornwallis Street, followed by a lifetime in beautiful downtown Tufts Cove, NS, and "Heaven on Earth", Drum Head, NS.  I was predeceased by my parents and eight siblings.

In 2011, I suffered the greatest of losses with the passing of my wife, Mary, who devoted every moment of her life to the welfare of our large family. However, my family consoled me and gave me the greatest of care for the remainder of my life. Following is a list of those who made my kick at the can memorable. First and foremost, the family members who considered me worthy of their love, the earliest friends and fellow survivors of the hungry thirties, Tom and Maggie MacDonald and Charlie Bowser. Also, the people of Drum Head who made me one of their own namely Morris, Os, Fred, Roll, and the unforgettable Jawbones. Thanks to my aunt Lena and family, my coffee friends at Mcdonald's, and the magazine crew. Last, but not least, my friend Gordie Richard.

See ya!”

At Doug's request, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place under the care of Serenity Funeral Home. As a family, we will lay him to rest with our Mother, in Drum Head, "Heaven on Earth”.
