Obituary of Derik Scott Carty

Please share a memory of Derik to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of Captain Derik Scott Carty, age 53 of Digby on June 29, 2023. Born in  Brockville, ON, on March 28 1970, he was the son of Alvin and Deborah (Stark) Carty.

In addition to his parents, Derik is survived by his commmon-law spouse, Shawnda; children, Dwayne (Brittney), Merissa (Shane), Grace (Dajel), and Caleb; grandchildren, Felicity, Kamryn, Drayden, Jace, Owen, and Ryleigh; brothers, Bobby (Crystal) and Phil (Cathy); grandmother, Dorothea Stark; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Derik started scallop fishing over 35 years ago at the age of 17. He was the proud Captain of the Nor’West Predator and the best in the fleet.  He was an avid hunter and no deer was safe if he was out in the country. He loved camping, BBQ’ing, and spending time with his family. He adored being in the company with his grandchildren who knew him as “Campground Grampy”. Derik’s pride and joy was the 359 Dunn Road property he purchased and fondly worked on with his tractor.

Derik was predeceased by his grandparents, Elsworth and Ameila Carty, and Robert Stark.

The family would like to give special thanks to the crew of the Nor’West Predator for their efforts to try and save Derik’s life. Also special thanks to Waylon Mosher for always being there for him.
