Obituary of John Douglas Shanks

John Douglas Shanks, age 75 of Dartmouth, passed away at home unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on September 15, 2023.  Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Douglas and Helen (Egan) Shanks.  John worked as a Letter Carrier for Canada Post from the age of 17 until his retirement.  He attended school at St. Peter’s School, Dartmouth, and resided in Dartmouth throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marion (Conrad); his parents and his sister, Rosemary; and brother, Curtis.  John is survived by seven siblings, Judi (Gordie) Ash, Brenda (Colin) Chisholm, Christine (Greg) Hatcher, Helen (George) Foote, Edward, Douglas, Mildred (Kirk) Penney; and sister-in-law, Patty Shanks.  John is also survived by his step-daughters, Cheryl Moser and Brenda Lovett; along with two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Cremation has taken place with no visitation as per his wishes under the direction of Serenity Cremation Services with a private family burial to take place in Lawrencetown Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Halifax Regional Municipality.  There will be a celebration of life held at the Somme Branch Legion on King Street, Dartmouth, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM where John was an active member for many years.  John was a member of the Somme Branch Bowling Team and enjoyed Darts at the Legion.
