Lucy, Sally, Emma and extended family,
I am so very, very sorry for your great losses.
I remember when your parents moved in across the street and when each of you were born. Not wanting to be the meddling neighbour, I mostly stayed on my side of the road. I regret that now. But I certainly had wonderful conversations with both of your parents as they took turns going for walks when you were babies & toddlers.
My favourite memory of your Dad was hearing him play his banjo out in the sunporch while I puttered in my yard. He also cared for me once at VRH after an allergic reaction. He certainly kept me calm!
They were a big part of our school family at PWES, too. Greatly valued and admired.
I think of you often and hope strength and comfort are yours.

Extremely saddened to have learned about Allan’s passing today. Allan and I were in medical school together and I have the honour of calling him a close friend. We were both born in Weston almost exactly a year apart and marvelled at the coincidence. In many ways Allan’s kindness and amazing social skills helped me through medical school and although we lost contact over the years, I will miss him. My condolences to his family and friends.

My condolences on the loss of Allan
I did not know him well yet he was an important part of my young adulthood
He used to play guitar and sing on the steps of the old Halifax Public Library and I would go with my friends every chance I could. Such a beautiful voice and very patient with audience requests.
I was happy to learn of his acceptance to Dalhousie medical school in the class of ‘95 (I am in class of 94) and we all were excited to hear his music again at class gatherings
It’s enormous loss; my deepest sympathies

I only found out today, June 2, 2024, that Al passed away last Fall. I’m just speechless and incredibly saddened, especially for Lucy, Sally and Emma. I have no idea what happened and why he was taken away at only 60 - I last saw him and Sally at the canal in the Gaspereau Valley when they went for a swim. Can’t remember if that was in ‘23 or ‘22.
Rest in Peace Al, you were a kind and beautiful person

I offer my condolences to Katherine and the children.
I was one of Wilke's teachers (I'd forgotten his first name, not sure if I ever knew it: always called him Wilke) when he was a family medicine resident in St John's NL. I have a picture of Wilke and my daughter (10 at the time) in a post performance bliss after he had accompanied her doing Newfoundland fiddle tunes at a family medicine residency party. He made her sound so good.
Always smiling and in a good mood. One of the joys of being a teacher is getting to know the likes of Wilke.
I was at his and Katherine's home in the battery of St John's when a grass fire started nearby. We had to evacuate. The only thing Wilke organized was the rescue of his beloved instruments. He told me he busked at the liquor store between Halifax and Yarmouth and made enough to pay room and board during medical school. I was impressed on many levels.
So sad to learn of his dying. My daughter turned 40 this year and that picture was a notable feature of her birthday tribute. Safe journey Katherine

I met the family when they came to register their two older girls in "Music for Young Children". I also had him as a Dr. in the ER at the Valley Regional Hospital a couple of times, and he brought his banjo to play at one of the girl's lessons. They were so very kind, they invited me for tea one afternoon and had a delicious homemade cake to share. When Emma was old enough, she also joined a music class with me. I loved to see them arrive and hear their latest adventures. A parent came to each lesson so I considered them good friends by the time they left the program.

My sincere sympathies to Allan's 3 girls and his extended family.
Allan was relatively new as staff at VRH when I was a student and resident there. I later had the chance to work as a colleague with him when I came back to do shifts as a locum.
Allan was wonderful to me. Very memorable as a teacher. He had me over and we bonded over music (I play much more amateurishly than he did). I still remember his version of "Soldier's Joy", a song I knew for years but his version was so unique and wonderful I'll never forget it.
I recall an incident when I was a resident where we had a very challenging patient and challenging diagnosis (a tough combination) and how graciously and professionally he handled the whole situation including an upset and angry family.
I hope some of him rubbed off on me. If it did I count myself lucky.
Sincerely,
Chris Milburn

Allan was a neighbor of ours for quite a while when he lived in the little octagon house in East Margaretsville. I was always fascinated to watch him rock on his heels as he played the banjo. A few years ago we drove to Pete Lucketts winery and listened to the Lustre Brothers CD the whole way. When we were seated for our meal, there was Allan at the next table. We had a nice chat. I will cherish that CD. He was certainly a pleasant gentle fellow and I know how much he loved his wife and daughters

Al and I became friends at Dalhousie living together in residence when I was just 18. We became good friends and I have countless memories of him as I home from downtown Halifax and stopping to listen to Al and Chip on the library steps. They were loved my so many for thier music but some of us felt that we were just sharing that music and that we were part of a lucky group that called them friends. Later after I moved to Ontario , Al would come to visit and bring me some Keith’s which was not available in Ontario back then. In 1997 I was honoured to have Al be one of the groomsman at my wedding. He and his banjo held court at a rehearsal party that is still talked about 30 years later. I just heard of his passing a few minutes ago and I feel a great loss. There are too few like Al in this world. I will miss my friend terribly. My sincere and deep felt condolences to all who loved Al. Stephen Fraser

I am deeply saddened to hear of Al's death. He was an integral part of the very musical social scene when I moved to the Valley, and we were both part of many jam sessions and stages. I know he was cherished by his close musical collaborators.
Al checked out the hexagonal cabin I was living in before he built his own, and later showed me around the heritage home he and Kathy had bought, speaking reverently of the responsibility he felt to take care of it.
I've heard lovely stories about him as a doctor, and I'm sure they're all true.
A dear, sweet man. My deepest sympathies to his family and close friends.

I was just heartbroken to see that Alan had passed away. He was a classmate of mine in medicine, and although we were not close, we did have great times together working on Euphoria together. Bizarrely, I was thinking of him last week when I heard the jazz number from the Charlie Brown Christmas Special, which he incorporated into one of our shows. He was a tremendous musical talent, but a much better human being - so kind and gentle. I am heartbroken to learn of Allan‘s passing. During the year that I had Sally in my elementary classroom, I got to see Allan and Kathy almost daily as they walked to and from the school with their girls. Chatting with them both before and after class was always a pleasure. I could see and feel the adoring love that they had for their daughters and loving respect for each other. I would learn of their family events and activities, and one day remarked to Allan that if they ever wanted to adopt a fourth child I was putting my name forward. Such a wonderful family in which to be brought up. My heart, thoughts and prayers, go out to the girls and Allan and Kathy’s families and all their friends.

This is a heartbreaking loss. Al was one of the most generous musicians I ever met, encouraging me long before I had any idea what I was doing. I knew him through both the music scene, and the North Mountain back to the land gang. Al used to escort me in to after party jams at Folk Harbour just so I’d get the experience. The Lustre Brothers were a phenomenon - I never waited for so long for an album, or was so thrilled when it finally came out. I also want to note that Al was a very old fashioned guy in charming ways. We ran into one another once at Hall’s Harbour and he introduced me to his young daughter as “Mr. Newland”. I quickly corrected course and introduced my daughter to him as “Dr. Wilkie…” and added, “the man who built the little hexagonal cabin where you were born.” Sending so much love to Al’s family, musical collaborators and community. He will be deeply missed.

Allan Wilkie was "carrying the torch" when I first first arrived in Halifax in the mid-eighties, and was wondering who around might have it. Al and Phil Sedore and others made themselves so easily discoverable, performing on the old library steps back in those days. The word "busker" happened along later. Al was a totally authoritative performer with a rich repertoire even then. I remember being nervous to even meet him and chat. I wish I'd have kept in touch, but I was just a fresh-faced newbie, and shy to boot. He said yes, and I said, "Oh good, I've always wanted to play the piano" I thought he was going to fall off his chair laughing. We are so sad to hear of Dr. Wilkie's passing. I loved teaching his 3 girls piano for the years they came to me for lessons. They and their parents were a joy to be around. Our special lesson was the day the Dr. Wilkie brought his banjo to show the students and to play for them. Most of them had never seen a banjo.
I loved every minute that they were with me, and especially appreciated the day they invited me to visit them for tea and cake. I look at the house every time we drive by there and wonder how they are doing. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all the girls and they are welcome to visit us at any time. Whenever I had to go to Emergency he would come and have a chat with me which I appreciated very much.

We are so saddened to hear of Alan's passing. Memories now will be so precious. When we were children you visited at the farm with Mom, Dad, Ruth Ann and Bethie. We all enjoyed Ipperwash Beach, swimming and long walks. Also the camping suppers and fires at the Pinery Park. As an adult we walked in the cold rain at the beach. I remember the concert in my living room with Jimmy Fuller and you. You both played different instruments. I also remember Alan senior asking Son can you play us a tune. Rick would say Alan, why are you making the poor child pay for his food. To my dear cousins you are in my prayers, may you all feel God's comfort as you go through this loss. May you feel the love of your Forest family.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Allan's passing. I worked with Allan at the Valley Regional Hospital ER for a couple of years early on in my nursing career. He was a kind, gentle soul and had the most calming presence. His bedside manner was impeccable and brought peace to patients and their families. My heart is with his family, friends and my former colleagues. May the love and good memories guide you all through the days ahead.

Such a kind and thoughtful physician colleague. I never saw him lose his cool or be in a grumpy mood, no matter how pressured or chaotic the day. It was always a pleasure to see him and share travel stories, especially about his love for Venice.

Al was truly the most beautiful soul that I've ever had the priviledge to call my friend. His compassion, kindness, intelligence, insight, creativity, humour, and gentle presence greatly enriched my life (among many others). His fierce humanity will remain with me forever.
My wife Shelley and I are mourning and fondly remembering Al with heartfelt support to all of Al's family and friends. Take care of each other everyone... Phil Sedore
