Obituary of Dick Pulsifer

Please share a memory of Dick to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts but great memories that we announce the sudden passing of our father, Richard "Dick" John Pulsifer, 84, of Rockland, on October 24, 2023.

In 1958, at the age of 21, Dad was sworn in as a County Constable in the County of Kings, and his respect and admiration for law enforcement grew from there. He spent 40 years as an insurance adjuster as well as a private investigator for a number of those years. Dad was an avid gardener and, in his younger years with our Mum, had many side hustles, from growing and selling produce and herbs to making concrete flower pots to selling tractors on Lovett Road.

In “retirement," Dad operated a small retail store called Cowboy Classics and later on became a dedicated volunteer with the RCMP in their Berwick detachment. From there, he started to work with the RCMP Grave Inspection program, for which he took great pride, using his amazing research skills to locate graves of fallen officers previously not recorded. Making sure those officers received recognition was paramount to Dad.

Dad was an amazing and engaging storyteller, remembering the smallest of details and always with a comedic flair. Our family has fond memories of the hilarity that would result from listening to one of Dad's stories. He mastered the witty comeback and had a soft heart when it came to any animal that crossed onto his property, spending much of his time (and pension) on feeding and caring for them, along with his own cats, over the years. (To Dad's neighbours: your cats may finally start to lose weight).

Dad was a self-proclaimed recluse yet still managed to go out for coffee twice a day to some of his favourite places, where the staff and fellow coffee goers always became friends. We are thankful for their kindness and friendship toward him over the years.

Dad is survived by his brother, Ron, Halifax; his two daughters, Wanda Pulsifer, Amherst; and Amy Pulsifer, Halifax; their mother, Sheila Young, Grand Pré; and his only grandchild, Olivia Pulsifer, Toronto. He is also survived by his nephew and several nieces.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, John and Bessie (MacIntosh) Pulsifer; and his younger brother and best friend, Frank, whom he missed profoundly.

A Funeral Service will be held on November 10, 2023, at 11:00 am  in the Serenity Funeral Home, with a reception to follow. Burial will take place at a later date. In honour of Dad's love of animals, in lieu of flowers please consider making a small donation to your local animal shelter. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
