Obituary of Winfield David Walsh
Please share a memory of Winfield to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Winfield David “Dave” Walsh, age 83 of Digby, passed away on November 30, 2023. Born in Blanford, to the late Sidney and Mildred (Burgoyne) Walsh, he spent his childhood growing up in Gabarus, Cape Breton.
Dave spent his early adult life as an aircraft technician in the Canadian Air Force, first in Cold Lake, Alberta and later in Comox, British Columbia. The remainder of his adult life was spent going to sea; first for the Canadian Coast Guard, having sailed on the Louis St. Laurent, the Labrador and the Edward Cornwallis. He went on to work with Fundy Gypsum, Kent Lines and National Sea.
Dave was an early adopter of yoga, having taken up the practice in his 30’s while at sea. He was a great accordion player and cribbage lover. He loved all things related to the supernatural and was a huge believer in UFOs. You never had a conversation with Dave that he wouldn’t ask if you had seen anything unusual in the sky! He loved a drink of whiskey, ice cream sundaes, a cup of coffee, and always a cigarette, “because his mother didn’t raise no quitters!”
“He was loved by his family and especially Heather, who with so much kindness, care, and love looked after Dad for the last five years. We are eternally grateful to her for this.”
Dave is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Woodworth and family, Tracy (Rob) Hird and family, and Judy Spidle and family; son, Jeremey Walsh and his boys Kolten, Kayden, Kohen, and Kylar; special daughter, Heather Weatherbee; and brother, Charlie (Sharon) Walsh of Sydney.
Besides his parents Dave was predeceased by his wife, Nancy; and brother, Ron Walsh.
There will be no service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held next summer in Gabarus. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Digby County Funeral Chapel, 367 Highway #303, Digby, NS B0V 1A0 (902-245-2444).
