Obituary of Roy Edward VanBuskirk
Roy Edward VanBuskirk of Greenwich, died on April 19, 2024, in the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville surrounded by family after a brief cancer battle. Roy was born August 27, 1939, and grew up in Hortonville. He was the fourth son of the late James and Velma (Higgins) VanBuskirk.
After high school Roy worked several places and, in 1958, began his career with Nova Scotia Light and Power, later known as NS Power. He took early retirement in 1993 and puttered at gardening; odd jobs; sharpening skates, knives, and garden tools; and fixing things for anyone who asked, while entertaining a multitude of friends in his Man Cave. In 2023, after 56 years in their home on Eden Row, Roy and Eva moved to Greenwich Heights.
Besides his loving wife of 60 plus years, Eva, of Greenwich; Roy is survived by sons, Jamie (Crystal), and Bruce (Connie), both of Halifax; grandchildren, Alexander, Kaylie, and Brandon, all of Halifax; brothers, Robert (Joan) of Halifax, Charles (Marilyn) of Sherbrooke Lake, John (Dianne) of Greenwich; and sisters Judi (Ken) Moen of Saskatchewan, Mary (Ken) Smeltzer of Wolfville, Jeannie of Port Williams, and Susan (Willie) Dempsey of Coldbrook, sisters-in-law, Ann (Burton) VanBuskirk of Edmonton, Alberta, and Maxine Blackmore of Kentville; and many niece, , nephews and extended family members.
In addition to his parents, Roy was predeceased by brother, Burton “ Bud / Buddy”.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Gaspereau Baptist Church with Pastor Connor Kehoe officiating. Dress code is casual plaid. A reception will follow at the White Rock Community Centre, 1542 White Rock Rd., White Rock. Interment in the Lower Horton Cemetery, Grand Pre, at a future date. Family flowers only. Donations in Roy's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook, NS, B4R 1B9 (902-679-2822).
